The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has endorsed Andrew Ojok Oulanyah, the son of the late Jacob Oulanyah as flag bearer for the Omoro Parliamentary seat ahead of the by-elections.
In a meeting organized by the NRM secretariat led by Richard Todwong, the NRM secretary general, held at the president’s country home in Rwakitura, Kiruhura district on Tuesday, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, the National Chairman of NRM held discussions with the leaders over the Omoro county constituency by-election.
During the meeting between President Museveni, the District executive committee, the aspirants, cultural, religious and opinion leaders from Omoro District, the five aspirants were given an opportunity to sell their candidature and the other four aspirants from the NRM agreed to step down in favour of the late Oulanyah’s son to continue with his father’s term in the August house, leaving him unopposed in the party.
This decision indicates that NRM will not hold any primaries for the Omoro seat.
“We have been interacting with them and have engaged them to have one person. Cultural leaders and religious leaders have participated in the mediation process,” revealed Todwong.
The aspirants included, Ojok Andrew Oulanyah, Okello Douglas Peter (current LCV chairperson), Olal Obong, Acellam Ben, and Okello Francis.
The president commended leaders from Omoro district for mediating the four aspirants and also thanked the aspirants for listening to their leaders, putting the party first before themselves and agreeing to step aside for a smooth process. Adding it is a matter of decency but also avoiding wastage of time.
“People get tired of endless elections. If Oulanyah had not died, we would not have elections in that area until 2026. If there is a sentiment that one of the children of Oulanyah stands in for him and for us, I think it is really decent to support his son to complete the father’s term. Let the boy go. If he is given a chance and he doesn’t perform in the remaining 3 years, you can come and compete with him in 2026,” said Museveni.
In the recently released programme for by-election of Member of Parliament for Omoro County Constituency, Omoro District, the Electoral Commission stated that the nomination of candidates will be conducted at Omoro district council hall between May 12 – 13, 2022 and campaigns will run from May 16 to 24, 2022 before elections are held on May 26.

“She told us that the man intends to kill her, and I deployed the village defence secretary to monitor the situation but it’s so unfortunate that we have lost a life,” said Kwegemya.
Kwegemya added that cases of domestic violence are on the increase and blamed police for granting suspects bond after they have been arrested.
Ngako in response blamed local authorities for not reporting the matter to police on time because if they had, the man would have been arrested.
The deceased’s body was conferred to Jinja regional referral hospital.

Officials in Nairobi, Kenya have declined a request from Ukraine to address Parliament for fear being dragged into a conflict with the potential to hurt its bilateral ties with both Kyiv and Moscow.
In February, Ukraine, which has been defending its territory against Russia’s invasion, made the request to address the Kenyan bicameral House when Moscow launched what it called a military operation in that country.
A well-placed source indicated the request was not honoured, with Kenya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs remaining quiet despite repeated follow-ups and reminders.
Nairobi denies refusing an audience to the Ukrainian diplomat, saying all his requests had been addressed, except the speech to Parliament.
Earlier this week, Kenyan diplomats in Nairobi argued that they have been doing enough already through the UN Security Council.
On Tuesday, a senior ministry official told journalists that there was no need to allow the speech, adding that Kyiv should make use of the available diplomatic channels.
“Why would they want to address the Kenyan Parliament, for instance? Is there a precedent?” the official asked.
Kenya holds one of the 10 non-permanent seats on the UN Security Council and both Ukraine and Russia see it as critical in deciding issues related to the conflict at the horse-shoe-shaped table in New York.
On Friday, Nairobi abstained from a UN General Assembly vote that proposed suspending Russia from the UN Human Rights Council.
The vote eventually passed, but Kenya, South Africa, Egypt and Nigeria were some of the African countries that abstained.
Kenya has been cautiously avoiding departing from the African Union’s position, which condemns the invasion but opposes the massive economic sanctions imposed on Russia.
While Nairobi has used its non-permanent seat on the Security Council to either condemn the invasion or abstain from decisions of both the General Assembly and the Council, it is yet to grant two wishes critical to Kyiv: a top-level meeting involving foreign ministers, and the speech to Parliament.
The Police in Kiira Region have arrested Pastor James Muwanguzi, 24 for allegedly masterminding the trafficking and defilement of girls from different districts in Eastern Uganda.
Following a tip-off from the neighbors, officers from Budondo police station stormed Life in God international ministries church in Budondo Ward, Jinja City Northern division on Wednesday morning and arrested Pastor Muwanguzi.
The neighbors who tipped off the police claim that Muwanguzi would source girls from Budaka, Namisindwa, Bududa, Jinja and Iganga districts, lock them up in a room he rented to serve as a church and office space and only open for them on Sundays.
When police sealed off the church premises, majority of the girls fled, five of the rescued victims accused Muwanguzi of repeatedly defiling and locking them up with the aim of blocking them from reporting his evil acts.
“Muwanguzi took me from my parents in early February 2022 and promised to foot my school dues, only to lock us up in the church since then to date,” she said one of the rescued girls.
James Mubi, the Kiira region police Spokesperson says that the children are being examined medically while pastor Muwanguzi will be charged with aggravated defilement and trafficking in children.
He also cautioned parents against giving away their children to self-proclaimed childcare givers, without conducting thorough background checks.
The Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries has revealed intentions to procure and distribute over 3,001 litres of the recommended pesticides and appropriate gear required to beat back the raging African army worm invasion that has devastated crops in many parts of the country.
Fred Bwino Kyakulaga, the State Minister for Agriculture, said that the ministry has contacted various distributors of the relevant pesticides and advised them to ensure that enough stocks exist in the country especially nearer the affected communities to control the pest.
Kyakulaga revealed that one litre of pesticide which costs about UGX 20,000 can effectively contain one acre of affected crop/ pasture land. Adding that the government will continue to conduct surveillance and monitoring of the pest, with a view of minimizing its buildup and potential full-blown epidemic.
“Ministry Crop Inspectors have been dispatched to various affected districts to verify reports, establish the pest status as well as provide guidance to the district staff and farmers on the control measures,” said Kyakulaga in a statement.
In the Tuesday plenary sitting, Members of Parliament tasked Prime Minister, Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja to present a report on the African armyworms that are ravaging crop gardens across the country and threatening food security in the country asking for immediate action to be taken by government.
Information received by the House indicates that more than 47 districts across the country including; Mukono, Wakiso, Katakwi, Bukedea, Bugweri, Serere, Busia, Bugiri, Mityana, Kiryandongo, Namutumba, Kumi, Luwero, Kasese, Masindi, Soroti, Nakapiripirit, Bulambuli, and Hoima have among others been invaded by the African armyworms that have left several acres of maize, millet and sorghum gardens destroyed.
In response, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja said that on Monday, cabinet got the report from the Minister of Agriculture about the issue and they came up with some resolutions, among which is the provision of pesticides to the different districts that have been affected.
Nabbanja appealed to MPs to support government in the fight against the armyworm in the different areas.
Dr. Stephen Byatwale, the commissioner in-charge of crop protection department in the Ministry of Agriculture recently said that the African Armyworm is a migratory moth suspected to have migrated from neighbouring countries renowned for higher temperatures into Uganda as a result of the climate change that the country is currently experiencing. Adding that the moth whose larvae stage is pest (army worm) causes a lot of losses to cereals.
“The caterpillars move in large numbers, attacking crop fields and that invasions are mostly common at the onset of the wet season. They feed on cereals including; maize, millet, sorghum and pastures. It has also been observed to also feed on sugarcane and wheat. In maize and other cereals, yield loss as a result of caterpillar feeding goes up to 100%,” he said.
The worst outbreak of the armyworm was reported in Kenya and Tanzania in 2001, where at least 157,000 hectares of cereals were destroyed.
Military tribunal in Burkina Faso has sentenced former President Blaise Compaoré to life imprisonment in absentia for his role in the assassination of his charismatic predecessor, Thomas Sankara.
The pair had been close friends and had jointly seized power in 1983.
After seizing power at the age of just 33, the Marxist revolutionalist came to be known by some as “Africa’s Che Guevara”.
Sankara set an ambitious social and economic program that sought to fight corruption, improve health-care and education, promoting women’s rights through reforms like ending polygamy and female genital mutilation, and inspiring leaders across the continent.
Sankara remains a hero for many across Africa and beyond because of his ardent support for independence from colonial rule in Africa, coupled with anti-imperialist attitude and simple lifestyle.

In 1987, four years after he took power in a coup, Sankara, (37) was gunned down along with 12 colleagues in the west African nation’s capital, Ouagadougou, during the coup d’état that brought Compaoré to power.
The prosecution said Sankara was lured to his death at a meeting of the ruling National Revolutionary Council.
He was shot in the chest at least seven times, according to ballistics experts who testified during the trial.
Fourteen people were in total charged for Sankara’s killing in the trial, which began in October, 2021.
Sankara’s widow, Mariam Sankara, who attended the trial throughout, said the verdict represented “justice and truth”.
“The judges have done their jobs and I am satisfied. Of course, I wished the main suspects would be here before the judges,” she told the Associated Press. “It is not good that people kill other people and stop the process of development of a country without being punished,” she added.
“Today, I am very proud to see the culmination of a legal battle of almost 30 years, proud to have a country where justice works, This verdict will give many people cause for thought,” said Guy Herve Kam, a lawyer for Sankara’s family.
Compaoré ruled for 27 years before being ousted in a coup in 2014 and fleeing to Ivory Coast, where he still resides. He previously denounced the trial by a military court as a political sham.
Whether Compaoré will serve his sentence any time soon is still a question of debate as he has lived in exile in Ivory Coast since he was removed from office following mass protests in 2014, and has taken up Ivorian nationality.
Ten of the charged were found guilty, including Compaoré’s security chief, Haycinthe Kafando who has been on the run for several years and was also tried in absentia. He too received a life sentence as he was accused of leading the hit squad that killed Sankara.
Gilbert Diendéré, one of the commanders of the army during the 1987 coup and the main defendant who was actually present at the trial, was also sentenced to life. He has been serving a 20-year sentence for a coup attempt in 2015.
Eight other defendants received sentences ranging from three to 20 years, while three defendants were acquitted.
