Crown Beverages Limited has launched Aquafina enriched drinking water in Uganda.

Speaking during the launch that took place on Thursday at the CBL Plant in Kakungulu, Sisa, Amos Nzeyi, the Chairman of Crown Beverages Limited, said that Aquafina is a whole different product and is a notch higher than the existing brands in the market and consumers will like it.

“You know normally, there are many types of wine, but there are some wines that are better than others…even whiskies by the way are not the same,” said Nzeyi adding that Aquafina is definitely a good addition to the market.

“We (Crown Beverages) have been registering achievements…we have won so many prizes of quality, cleanliness as you see this place is up to the standards of any watering company in the world, be in Europe, Asia, South Africa, America,” Nzeyi added.

Paddy Muramiirah, the CEO of Crown Beverages Limited said that Aquafina is an international brand and Uganda is just the third country in Africa to launch the product after Nigeria and Egypt.

Muramiirah added that the water is expertly processed ensuring only the essential elements and minerals remain, resulting in a clear, pure and perfect tasting water.

“Aquafina water is a worldwide water brand in Europe, Asia, South Africa, and America and is probably the best in Sub-Saharan Africa, in East Africa, it has launched first in Uganda before moving to other neighboring countries,” said Muramiirah.

Aquafina was first launched in the USA in 1994. Over the last two decades it has expanded into Asia, UAE, and most recently Africa.

Aquafina is available in a 500ml pack at a recommended retail price of UGX 1000 only countrywide.

Coffee farmers form cooperative to boost production, marketing

Coffee farmers in Ibanda district have formed a cooperative society that seeks to find ways to increase production and quality along the value chain.

Speaking during the launch of Ibanda Coffee Growers’ Cooperative Union at the district head offices on Wednesday, Herbert Happy Mayanja, the LC V chairman Ibanda district said the cooperative will help farmers to find better markets by removing middlemen who have been cheating farmers.

Mayanja added that middlemen have been taking advantage of desperate farmers and paying them peanuts for their coffee, which the cooperative will fight using its strong bargaining power.

He said the group also targets to export its coffee in the future to ensure farmers gain maximally from their investment in the crop.

According to Alison Mwesigye, the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) coordinator for Ibanda and Kitagwenda districts, 600 tonnes of coffee from Ibanda district are exported by different individual traders.

The district targets to increase production from almost one and a half kilogrammes of clean coffee per tree annually to five kilos within five years.

Silver Nkwasibwe, the Ibanda district senior agriculture officer, explained the average production per coffee tree is currently at 1.4 kilogrammes, saying that it was very low.

Additionally, interim district and sub-county executive committees have been formed to spearhead the project as well as mobilize and register farmers.

The district committee of 11 members is chaired by Joseph Bankunda, from Rukiri sub-county in Ibanda South County.

Kazo: Farmers decry outbreak of African swine fever

Farmers dealing in piggery and traders selling pork in Kazo district, are devastated by the outbreak of Africa Swine Fever (ASF) in the district.

Ham Rubainika, the Kazo district secretary for production and natural resources said several cases were first confirmed in Migina Sub-county after the visit by the District Veterinary Officer (DVO) and the Lab attendant, who were tipped off by some of the affected farmers.

Esau Mwebeiha, the parish councilor representing Kikoni Parish in the Migina sub-county council said the ASF outbreak was first registered in September 2021, where over 50 pigs in Kikoni parish died.

Mwebeiha added that this which prompted the authorities to institute a temporary quarantine that lasted until May 2022.

Mwebeiha noted that however, in August, another outbreak led to the loss of more pigs.

Rubainika urged the farmers and all the residents to try their best in containing the disease thus minimizing the spread in the district.

According to World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH), African swine fever (ASF) is a highly contagious viral disease of domestic and wild pigs, whose mortality rate can reach 100%.  

WOAH notes that there is currently no effective vaccine against ASF. 

WOAH adds that although ASF is not a danger to human health, it has devastating effects on pig populations and the farming economy.

The virus is characterized as highly resistant in the environment, can survive on clothes, boots, wheels, and various pork products, such as ham, sausages or bacon.

According to WOAH, human behaviors play an important role in spreading this pig disease across borders if adequate measures are not taken.

Airtel Uganda increases Data volumes up to 150%

For the same prices, data volumes have been increased by an average of over 50% across the different tariff classes to enable users adjust to tough economic times.

In a bid to support customers adjust to the tough economic times, Airtel Uganda has today increased the Data bundles volumes at the same prices. The changes which were on Monday announced at a press conference at their clement hill Head office, are intended to support customers do more e-commerce and reduce the need to move as the impact of fuel scarcity bites.

While addressing the media, the Airtel Uganda Marketing Director, Mr. Henry Njoroge noted that growing access to the internet is a socioeconomic empowerment intervention.

“We believe that the action we have taken today will support our customers to connect with their business partners in the most affordable way. With more than 50% data volumes added across the different data bundles, we are giving customers more value for money and keeping their economic fortunes alive,” said Njoroge.

“In addition, we are bringing 88% more data to our customers who purchase daily 24hour validity bundles. We recognize that most of our people earn a daily income. We are intentional in ensuring that this group of our customers are supported with affordable data to make their business communication. This is the glue that binds Uganda’s small and micro enterprises.

These efforts are complemented by our most affordable 4G  Smartphone currently in our shops across the country. At UGX250,000/= the customer gets the 4G Smartphone that comes with 12 months data worth 86500/= redeemed as 1GB per month” said  Njoroge.

In the weekly data bundle segment, it is the 5000 bundle that got the biggest boost of up to 76% increase in volume from 1.02GB to 1.8GB.

Those who use monthly data bundles saw a 43% increase in volume across the different bundles. The biggest boost of 76% has been given to the customers who buy and use 10,000 bundle whose volume has been increased from 1.5GB to 3.5GB.

According to Njoroge, Airtel has made investments and continues to make investments in the 4G network, to make it available all the time, continues to innovate and provide affordable solutions and products for the transformation of Uganda.

Airtel’s ‘Uganda Needs of You’ Campaign reveals 3 more Inspiring Ugandans changing society.

Judges in the ongoing Uganda Needs More of You Campaign have identified the first batch of Techpreneurs who have leveraged technology to positively influence their communities.

At the start of March, Airtel Uganda called upon ordinary Ugandans to submit their stories or nominate anyone who they believe deserves to be recognized for utilizing technology to solve in their communities and changing the lives of others.

David Birungi, the Public Relations Manager at Airtel Uganda expressed his gratitude to participants who have responded to the call saying; “We are impressed by the compelling stories of various Ugandans who have championed innovative ideas to positively impact their communities. As a solution provider that connects businesses to their client and families to their loved ones through affordable internet products and services, Airtel Uganda will continue to support initiatives like UG Needs More of You so that we inspire more people to continue on this journey to transform their communities and economy as a whole.”

He added, “In the first batch, three stories have so far been identified, these will be open to the public voting process and a televised series on select media houses that will feature the nominees as they showcase how they have used technology to transform their business and the community around them.”

The stories that will feature in the first phase of the voting process include;

  • Ensibuuko, a Savings Group that enables SACCOS to access digital savings accounts, loans, and other financial services through a phone.
  • Jaguza Tech, a clod livestock management system that empowers livestock farmers, strengthens food security, and mitigates the risk of livestock disease, and,
  • Wabibi Pads, producers of reusable sanitary pads for women and girls in marginalized communities and have embraced social media to reach and train over 1,000 women and girls and also distributed over 10,000 packs since 2020.

Over the next course of weeks, the 3 stories above will continue to be voted by the public to make it to the next stage of the campaign. The final transformative stories will receive cash rewards to boost their performance at a final gala in August 2022. The voting has been opened to the public and they will vote for their favorite story by dialing 162 or using SMS (162).

The stores are being vetted by a jury comprising of; Dr. Maggie Kigozi, the Chairperson of Africa Scout Foundation, Mr. Maurice Mugisha, Deputy Managing Director, UBC TV, Mr. David Birungi, PR Manager at Airtel Uganda and Ms. Noela Byuma, Acting Head Brand and Comms at Airtel Uganda.

 “Globally, technology continues to be a key driver of economic growth, which facilitates efficient provision of improved goods and services within society resulting into positive social changes like the creation of income-generating avenues for those employed in sectors that provide tech solutions for their customers.  As Airtel, we are proud to front such a cause that derives an agenda that influences socio-economic development,” Birungi concluded.

Airtel Uganda launches Secure Merchant Tills for Small Businesses.

Airtel Mobile Commerce Uganda Limited (AMCUL) has announced the addition of the Merchant Till Number for small businesses feature on Airtel Money. 

This service which is suitable for informal businesses like market vendors, salon operators, Boda Boda riders on the Airtel network will enable them to separate their business money collections from personal money using their existing Airtel SIM cards.

Regular Airtel Money customers and business owners across the country, will ably use their existing SIM Cards to separate their business finances from their personal Airtel money wallet by using the USSD Code *185*10*10# to create Unique Merchant Till Numbers.

They can then use this number to;

  • Receive payments for goods and services from their duuka, boda rides, saloon, etc.
  • Transfer money from the till number to their Airtel Money number and
  • View balances on both their new Merchant Till Number and personal Airtel Money wallet.

While launching the new service, on Tuesday at Nakawa Market, Japhet Aritho, the AMCUL Managing Director noted that they are committed to delivering on their promise to grow financial inclusion for all in Uganda.

“Today, we have enabled small businesses to create the Airtel Money Merchant Till Number in the comfort of their shops. This is the first tool in business basic financial management. It will help these growing businesses to focus on growing their businesses and tracking their revenues better,” said Aritho.

Aritho added that Airtel has deliberately built a telecom infrastructure of over 21,000 site masts across Uganda, and it is on the back of this infrastructure that innovative solutions like the Merchant Till Number service have been made possible. Customers can enjoy seamless boarder to boarder connectivity, get access to affordable devices, and affordable e-commerce solutions.  

Japhet concluded saying, “The new Micro Merchant Till number service will boost business as the proprietors will have proper accountability and oversight of their business. They will know the income that is resultant of the business transactions separate from their personal transactions. The users will, using their current SIM cards, be able to monitor up to 10 different branches of their small businesses.”

WWF hailed for fostering value addition on timber

The Minister of state for youth and children affairs, Hon. Nyirabashitsi Sarah Mateke has appreciated the World Wide fund for Nature (WWF)’s efforts towards value addition on timber.

While presiding over the launch of the strategic road map for Kisoro timber dealers and carpenters cooperative society limited at Mubano hotel in Kisoro town, Mateke said that value addition should start from seedling, to planting, management up to harvesting with quality machines in cutting.

Mateke applauded WWF for assisting in developing a strategic road map that will help to add value on timber to ensure export market.

She urged the members of the community to appreciate the importance of conserving nature including the surrounding national parks like Ichuya forest reserve which generate income and further appealed for international community to come to Kisoro district to invest in the gifted resources for tourism and economic development.

Alex Ndambajimana, the vice Chairperson Kisoro district appreciated WWF for the efforts towards helping the indigenous people, the Batwa to conserve their cultural heritage.

He noted that they are challenged by poor road network for tourism adding that it’s only Kisoro district that has the most beautiful short river in the world plus golden monkeys not seen anywhere in the world.

David Duli, the WWF Country Director said that WWF is there to bring glory of having the environmental supporting production systems and services that come naturally in having healthy environment to facilitate development activities.

He said timber and trees is one of the most common economic activities in south western Uganda and it’s when World Wide Fund for nature comes in to ensure sustainable development of natural resource management where trees are performing their functions.

Additionally, WWF offered a grant in form of revolving fund of UGX 20 million for the cooperative society for members to borrow and pay back at affordable interest rate.

Airtel Uganda launches Smart Plans Service to allow customers enjoy data, voice, SMS in one access

Airtel Uganda has unveiled a new service dubbed Airtel Smart Plans that will enable customers enjoy data, voice and SMS services in one access.

Customers will be able to pay for the service using Airtel Money and can activate the Airtel Smart Plans in the comfort of their offices, living rooms or boardrooms by dialling *188# without the need to trek to Service Centres.

Speaking at the launch at Sheraton Kampala hotel on Wednesday afternoon, Amit Kapur, Chief Commercial Officer at Airtel Uganda said the new service will give customers the best experience.

Kapur noted that Airtel Smart Plans have been designed to enable customers’ access a one –stop solution for businesses, families and people who offer professional services.  The Airtel Smart Plans offers a data, SMS, and voice resources in a single post-paid hustle free access.

He added, “At Airtel Uganda we continue to innovate and adjust our affordable product and service portfolio to support businesses to thrive. We are the technology enabler, of choice, as Ugandan Businesses journey to full recovery”.

Henry Njoroge, the Airtel Uganda Marketing Manager explained that new service will allow customers to share voice, data and SMS with about four other people.

“On one package, a customer can add as much as four other people. The Airtel Smart Plans will ensure customers receive one month free Airtel TV subscription and reduced roaming rates,” said Njoroge.

Airtel Smart Plan customers will;

  • Be able to share these resources using Tugabane
  • Receive one-month free ShowMax Subscription
  • Receive one-month free Airtel TV Subscription
  • Have priority service whenever they call the Call Centre
  • Have preferential roaming rates to all travel destinations.

Njoroge noted that the Airtel Smart Plans will be categorized in Platinum and Gold.

“For Platinum, a customer will have to pay shs 250,000 to get data worth 150GB, 2000 voice minutes, 1000SMS, Free Airtel TV monthly and 30 days free ShowMax. For those who subscribe to Gold ,they will to pay shs150,000 and will enjoy data worth 75GB, 2000 voice minutes, 1000 SMS,Free Airtel TV monthly and 30 days free ShowMax,”he noted.

Additionally, Airtel Uganda’s new Airtel Smart Plans package will allow customers to access a 30-Day Free subscription to MultiChoice’s ShowMax, an online subscription video-on-demand entertainment service accessible to customers across the country.
