Schools in Kazo and Kiruhura register low turn-up of students

After the school’s calendar begun on Monday February 6, 2023, a smaller number of learners have reported in most of the schools in Kazo and Kiruhura districts.

According to the survey made by our reporter in various schools including Talents Community primary school, St Mary’s secondary school, Kazo Modern High school, Kyabahura 1 Model primary school, Kazo Model primary school among others, the turn up was low.

Only Kazo Model P/S has received a significant number of students reporting on day one.

A section of head teachers have attributed this to parents having financial challenges.

Katureebe Godfrey, a head teacher at Kazo Modern High School told our reporter that only a quarter of last years’ enrolment had been registered by first day of schools opening. He noted that it may be due to the laxity of some parents.

Guston Katungye Bwesigye, the school headmaster for Kyabahura 1 Model primary school revealed that students reported at a promising rate and teachers were ready to conduct lessons. He implored parents to always make shopping for their children before reporting dates to avoid inconveniences.

The Head Teacher Kazo Model Primary School, Murarira Sam expressed gratitude to parents and students who made it yesterday amidst bad economic times in the country. 

In Kiruhura district, Schools are also facing the challenge of a small number of pupils or students reporting to schools.

Allen Tumusime, the head teacher Nshwerenkye p/s said the school is still registering pupils and urged parents to let their children arrive at school even though they are not well financially.

Rev.David Kagumya, the head teacher, Bishops Girls School said the reporting is still slow but he hopes that the number of students will increase. He asked parents to clear school fees in time.

Bakashaba Augustin, the head teacher Rushere Christian high school noted that delaying children to report early at school will disturb their performance.

Kiruhura District Education Officer, Busingye Merab Mwesigye asked parents to be careful with their children while taking them back to school.

The Senior inspector of schools in Kiruhura district, Tumukunde Duncan requested teacher to do their parental job properly by organizing the children when they receive them at school.

Schools asked to remain vigilant about homosexuality vice

Authorities in schools have been asked to remain vigilant and look out for the homosexuality vice that has engulfed most schools in the country.

Francis Tumwebaze, the Mbarara city education officer made the warning while addressing the press at his office in Booma, Kamukuzi ward, Mbarara city.

Tumwebaze noted that it is dangerous to promote homosexuality in schools, as it may confuse teenagers during their sexual development.

Tumwebaze added that young boys and girls naturally do not want to be with each other when they are young, and can therefore be confused to think they are homosexual.

He called upon all institutions like the church to strongly fight against this habit.

Authorities asked to nominate distinguished individuals for medals and awards

Authorities in Kiruhura district have confirmed that preparations in district ahead of National Women’s Day on 8th March, 2023 are ongoing.

Asaba David Nkojo, the Deputy RDC for Kiruhura said that the district is lucky to host such a big event which will benefit the district residents mostly business people.

RDC Asaba added that suitable grounds for this function are being reviewed among the proposed places which include; Sanga, Kashongi and Nshwere.

During her visit to Kiruhura district on Tuesday, Hajjat Malole Zaminah, the Secretary Presidential Awards committee, also head of the Chancery department said that on National women’s day, many people will be given medals for their contributions to the Nation in different areas as a sign of appreciation.

Hajjat Malole also urged women to turn up in big number on that day.

During her visit to Kazo district at the district headquarters, Hajjat Malole Zaminah, made a presentation before the leaders of Kazo about the national honours and awards.

In her message, Hajjat Zaminah revealed that every country has a system of recognizing and rewarding outstanding acts and achievements of its citizens. Such recognition puts on record public appreciation for the contribution of persons who have distinguished themselves in service to the nation.

Zaminah noted that awards in the form of Orders, Medals and Decorations exist almost everywhere in society. Governments, corporate organizations and non-government organizations all give awards in the civil and military sectors, in academia, culture, media, religion, sports, among others.

She also explained that they don’t give money to the medalist but the recognition is highly respected, urging people to always respect such people wherever they go.

She urged the people to always nominate the real and true people deserving to be awarded by their important roles in their different capacities.

The National Honours and Awards Act, 2001 provides for the creation of the Presidential Awards Committee, recognition and conferment of titles of Honour, decoration, medals, awards, and orders, and the establishment of a Chancery, which is the permanent custodian and administrator of Uganda’s National Honours.

Kiruhura: Beneficiaries urged to care for projects done by UPDF

The Minister for Foreign affairs, Gen. Jeje Odongo has commissioned the staff quarters of ten rooms as well as a complete toilet building at Nshwere Primary school and staff quarters of two rooms at Rwobusisi Primary school in Kiruhura district.

Speaking to parents at Nshwere Primary School on Sunday, Odongo said the projects are part of the work done by the UPDF as part of Tarehe Sita anniversary week activities.

Representing the CDF, General Wilson Mbadi Mbasu in Kiruhura, Brig. Gen. Emmanuel Rwanshande said that after the successful bush war of NRA, they knew that their success came from civilians’ contribution to them, and that is why they pay them back by working for civilians.

UPDF work to civilians indicates that they appreciate the people who helped National Resistance Army (NRA), present day National Resistance Movement (NRM) to fight bad governments and save the country from the hands of dictatorship in 1986 when it was ushered into power.

Brig. Gen. Rwashande added that they did some different work for the districts of greater Mbarara region.

Hon. Kajwengye Wilson, the Member of Parliament Nyabushozi County urged the school management at Nshwere P/S to put more effort towards academic excellence of the pupils.

Hon. Jovanice Rwenduru Twinobusingye appreciated the UPDF for doing commendable work and asked the beneficiaries to take care of these projects.

UPDF praised for Tarehe Sita Anniversary week activities in Greater Mbarara

Political leaders and residents of Greater Mbarara region have expressed their gratitude towards the work that UPDF has done during the 42nd Tarehe sita week in this region.

This was revealed during the 42nd Tarehe sita celebrations held at Kakyeka stadium, Mbarara city on Monday.

During his speech, President Yoweri Museveni, the Commander in Chief of the armed forces who was the chief guest narrated the details of the attack revealing that, on February 6th in 1981 at 08:00am, the 43 members of the special force, armed with 27 rifles attacked a huge garrison of the Kabamba military training school.

President Museveni appreciated everyone that has made a contribution towards the success of the revolution and promised that their strategic goals of prosperity for all, strategic security for Africa and African fraternity, will be achieved.

“I salute all the people that have made any contribution to these heroic efforts, including the people of the Ankole-Kigyezi area who went through the invasion of 1972; the 1979 war when I was involved in capturing Mbarara Town on the 28th of February, 1979; and the protracted battle for Mbarara ─ 1985, when we besieged Mbarara barracks for 3 months,” said President Museveni.

Hon Mwesigwa Rukaari, the Member of Parliament Mbarara city said that the plan to bring Tarehe sita in Mbarara region was the best decision noting that Mbarara has been the centre of revolution since 1960s and for all the other revolutions throughout the years Mbarara was so involved and played a good role.

Rukaari added that through the work and dedication of UPDF, leaders and residents of Greater Mbarara region are now able to sacrifice their time for sanitation work and other works of development.

At the same event which was basically to benefit the people of Greater Mbarara Region through Tarehe sita week activities, Hon Jenipher Muheesi, the woman Member of Parliament Kazo district also appreciated UPDF for recognizing the work, the people of Mbarara did during the struggle.

During Tarehe sita week, the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) did several activities like renovation and construction of infrastructure in select schools & health centres, health camps, general cleaning of towns and electing of monuments in remembrance of the efforts and sacrifices of the people from Greater Mbarara in the liberation struggle. 

The activities were carried out in Mbarara City and district, Ibanda, Kazo, Isingiro, Kiruhura, and Rwampara districts.

The 42nd Tarehe Sita anniversary was held under the theme: “Recognizing the Sacrifice of the founders of the Peoples Revolution for social economic transformation.”

Tarehe Sita is the day UPDF marks the attack on Kabamba barracks in 1981 which launched the five-year struggle that brought the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government into power 37 years ago.

The day is celebrated every 6th of February.

Kazo: Tarehe Sita anniversary army week activities launched

The Minister of Defence, Vincent Bamulangaki Ssempijja has today officiated the launch of the 42nd Tarehe Sita anniversary army week activities in Greater Mbarara sub-region.

Speaking as chief guest at the function that took place at Kazo Playground, in Kazo Town council, Kazo district, Ssempijja commended the people of Kazo for the various roles they played during the liberation saying that it’s the reason for the decision to bring this function to Kazo and greater Mbarara.

Speaking at the same function, the Deputy Chief of defence forces Maj. Gen. Don Nabasa who represented the Chief of Defence Forces Gen Wilson Mbasu Mbadi noted that Tarehe Sita activities exist not that they have a lot but to cement the relationship between the army and the people of Kazo and greater Mbarara for the work they did during the struggle.

The Chief of Civil-Military Cooperation in the UPDF, Brig. Gen. Emmanuel Rwashande lauded the residents for maintaining a strong relationship with the army, noting that the regional activities that include medical outreach programs, tree planting campaign and the construction and renovation of infrastructure in selected areas which symbolize the historical relationship between UPDF and the people which is critical for peace and stability so that prosperity can reign.

Kazo district leaders led by the chairman LC V, Rev Samuel Mugisha and the area member of Parliament, Hon Dan Kimosho appreciated the president and the UPDF for considering Kazo to host this function saying the sons of Kazo also did good work in liberating this country.

The regional launch was attended by several dignitaries like; representatives of security forces, political leaders of greater Mbarara sub-region , religious leaders, historicals, opinion leaders among others and was celebrated under the Theme; “Recognizing the sacrifice of the founders of the people’s revolution for social economic transformation.”

Kazo: Residents urged to get vaccinated against Hepatitis B

In an effort to raise awareness about Hepatitis B, our reporter caught up with Mumbere Sam, the in-charge of Bahamagara Medical Clinics operating in Kazo Town Council, Kazo District.

Dr Mumbere explained that Hepatitis affects people in different ways; some may experience fatigue, stomach pain or fever, while others may not even know that they have Hepatitis.

A section of people develop serious health ailments, which include liver failure or brain damage.

According to the World Health Organization(WHO), Hepatitis B is a viral infection that attacks the liver and can cause both acute and chronic disease.

The Hepatitis virus presents in five commonly known strains: Type A, B, C, D and E.

All of them affect the liver but there are some key differences in origin, transmission, and severity of the disease. 

WHO adds that the virus is most commonly transmitted from mother to child during birth and delivery, as well as through contact with blood or other body fluids during sex with an infected partner, unsafe injections or exposures to sharp instruments.

WHO maintains that Hepatitis is manageable and can only be preventable with vaccination, but there is no cure at present. 

Dr Mumbere has urged people to avoid all the ways of contracting viral infections like avoiding unprotected sex with an infected person, constant testing, among others which are the most common cause of hepatitis.

Dr Mumbere has also urged people to vaccinate noting that Hepatitis B can be prevented by vaccines that are safe, available and effective.

WHO estimates that Hepatitis B affects approximately 296 million people, including over 6 million children under the age of 5 and it contributes to an estimated 820,000 deaths every year.

PLE 2022: Boys perform better than girls

Uganda’s First Lady and Minister of Education, Janet Museveni has this Friday officiated the release of the 2022 Primary Leaving Examinations results at State House in Nakasero, Kampala.

Daniel Odongo, the Uganda National Examination Board Executive Director revealed that a total of 714,702 out of 811,810 students who sat for the examinations have passed and can proceed to post-primary education.

Of these, 114,617 passed in first grade, 357,799 passed in grade two,146,583 in third grade, and 95,702 passed in fourth grade.

According to UNEB statistics, 97,109 candidates where not graded.

Odongo noted that at least the 97,109 pupils who have failed the exams represent 12% of the total number of candidates who sat for the examinations in 2022 and they will have to repeat the class.

The results released on Friday also indicated that 714,702 candidates passed the PLE compared to 659,910 the previous year 2021 representing 89.8% of the overall number of candidates who sat for the exams.

PLE was conducted on November 8th and 9th, 2022, with a total of 832,810 candidates registered from 14,153 examination centers.

51.9 percent of the total registered candidates were females and 48.1 percent were males.

583,769 were funded under the Universal Primary Education (UPE) program, while 249,041 were non-UPE candidates.

North Ankole Diocese Bishop has urged Christians to resist homosexuality acts

The Bishop of North Ankole Diocese, Rt Rev Steven Namanya has vowed to mobilize Christians to resist homosexuality in his diocese even if it means resorting to the Biblical times of Moses where such people would be stoned.

Speaking during the Compassion Uganda satellite launch and 2nd graduation of compassion children at Canon Buningwire Guest house on Wednesday, Bishop Namanya told the Christians and church leaders in greater Kiruhura that there is no way Christians in Uganda should accept the Western values which he says are contrary to the Christian teachings and the African culture.

The Bishop noted that the vice of homosexuality is slowly but surely creeping into our communities like Schools, where he said that there is information that homosexuals have also started penetrating young people in search of new recruits.

The Bishop asked Christians and non-Christians to work together and fight the vice and appealed to parents to develop a culture of talking to their children about the dangers of accepting small gifts from foreigners whose motive is not known.

Instead, he said, they should guide them on Christian values that can help them resist practices that will ruin their lives.

Speaking at the same function, Lenny Mugisha, the compassion country director asked the grandaunds to go in their communities and advocate for childrencommitted to Jesus Christ in all that they do where he also pronounced that Compassion also they don’t support homosexuality.

Compassion project started in 2001 in North Ankole Diocese where they were operating in centers including Kashwa CDC, Kazo CDC, Burunga CDC, Ruhuhe CDC,  Sya CDC, Kashongi CDC, and Kanyaryeru CDC but now, the project will continue working in only three centers of Ruhuhe, Sya, and Kashongi under satellite.

LC I and II Chairpersons demand for better transport means

LC I and II chairpersons in Mbarara City have expressed dissatisfaction with government initiative of giving them bicycles to ease their transport.

While receiving the 210 bicycles at mayor’s gardens in Mbarara city on Tuesday, a section of chairpersons said they are too old to ride bicycles at their age to monitor government projects.

Agaba Antony, the LC I chairperson Kiyanja cell in Mbarara city north said that since they are in urban setup, bicycles are not the best transport means to consider.

He added that the government should revise the decision on both bicycles and the UGX 10,000 allowance given to chairpersons every month because they deserve better.

Robert Mugabe Kakyebezi, the city mayor noted that bicycles given to LC I chairpersons are meant to facilitate community mobilization and fighting domestic violence in their villages.

While handing over bicycles, Lt Col James Mwesigye, the RCC Mbarara city asked the chairpersons to fight corruption in their villages adding that the issue of salaries and allowances of Local Government political leaders will be addressed later.
