Friedrich Merz’s Conservatives Win German Election Amid Political Fracture

Friedrich Merz’s conservatives have emerged victorious in Germany’s election outpacing rival parties but falling short of the expected 30% vote share. Addressing cheering supporters, Merz called for celebration but emphasized the urgency of forming a government prioritizing negotiations with the third-placed Social Democrats led by Olaf Scholz.

Before results were finalized, Merz stated his focus would be on European unity to achieve greater independence from the US. The far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) also celebrated a record second-place result, garnering 20.8% of the vote. However, even with this achievement, the mood at their headquarters was muted as they had hoped for more.

Merz who has never held a ministerial position, pledged to provide strong leadership in Europe and bolster support for Ukraine criticizing US President Donald Trump’s indifference towards European issues. Following the election, Merz intends to form a coalition with Scholz’s Social Democrats despite their record low support of 16.4%. Both parties, however, collectively hold a majority in the 630-seat parliament.

The election saw an impressive 83% voter turnout, the highest since before German reunification in 1990. The rise of the AfD capitalizing on public discontent over rising prices and security concerns signals a shift in the political landscape. Merz dismissed the AfD’s rise as a symptom of unresolved issues and expressed determination to address these problems.

Trump welcomed Merz’s victory claiming it reflected a common desire for change among Germans and Americans. European leaders including France’s Emmanuel Macron and the UK’s Sir Keir Starmer swiftly congratulated Merz highlighting the need for unity in facing global challenges.

Younger voters, however, showed increased interest in alternative parties, particularly the AfD and the Left, the latter of which recently surged in popularity thanks to viral TikTok campaigns. As the political landscape evolves, Merz faces the challenge of navigating a fractured electorate while trying to establish a stable coalition government.

Ssemadde issued with a second warrant of arrest

The Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s Court has issued a warrant of arrest for Isaac Ssemakadde, the President of the Uganda Law Society (ULS) after he failed to show up for a scheduled court hearing. Chief Magistrate, Ronald Kayizzi made the ruling on Monday citing Ssemakadde’s absence in connection with charges of indecently insulting Jane Frances Abodo, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Court documents reveal that the charges against Ssemakadde were sanctioned on February 17, 2025, under Section 113 of the Penal Code Act. He was originally summoned to appear in court on January 29, 2025. However, his legal representatives informed the court that he was unwell and awaiting a pending ruling from the High Court, resulting in a rescheduled hearing for February 24, 2025.

Despite this extension, Ssemakadde did not appear again. His lawyers argued that there was a High Court application pending that sought to stay the proceedings. However, Magistrate Kayizzi emphasized the necessity of personal appearance for taking of pleas, stating, “While an accused person can be represented by counsel under Article 28(3) of the Constitution, he or she must appear in person.”

Kayizzi remarked that the court could not continue extending summons without valid causes pointing to the affidavit of service that confirmed Ssemakadde was duly served. The magistrate took action under Section 55(1) of the Magistrates’ Courts Act and mandated that the arrest warrant be returned to court by March 19, 2025.

The private prosecution was initiated by lawyers Joshua Byamazima and Tonny Tumukunde who allege that Ssemakadde insulted the DPP’s modesty during remarks made on November 18, 2024. According to the charge sheet, Ssemakadde referred to Lady Justice Abodo in derogatory terms, including “a vagina from Karamoja, a dead wood, a dimwit and a shameless careerist,” during an event at the People’s Front for Freedom office in Katonga Village, Kampala.

This latest warrant marks the second issued against Ssemakadde within ten days. On February 14, 2025, High Court Judge Musa Ssekaana ordered his arrest to serve a two-year prison sentence for contempt of court due to ongoing derogatory remarks against judicial officers disseminated via his social media accounts.

Pope Francis Asks for Prayers Amid Hospitalization for Double Pneumonia

Pope Francis has urged Catholics worldwide to pray for him as he continues to receive treatment for double pneumonia at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. This marks the second consecutive Sunday that the 88-year-old pontiff has been unable to deliver the traditional Angelus prayer in person.

In a heartfelt message written over the past few days, Pope Francis expressed his confidence as he undergoes treatment, stating, “I am confidently continuing my hospitalisation and carrying on with the necessary treatment.” This message comes after the Vatican revealed on Saturday that the Pope’s condition is still considered “critical.”

In Sunday’s message, the Pope extended his gratitude to the medical staff at the hospital and to the many well-wishers who have sent him messages of support. “In recent days, I have received many messages of affection and I have been particularly struck by the letters and drawings from children,” he noted. “Thank you for this closeness and for the prayers of comfort I have received from all over the world! I entrust you all to the intercession of Mary, and I ask you to pray for me.”

Pope Francis was first admitted to the hospital on February 14 after struggling with breathing difficulties. His history of lung infections including having part of a lung removed at age 21 and developing pleurisy as an adult makes him particularly vulnerable to respiratory issues.

Since becoming Pope 12 years ago, he has been hospitalized multiple times including for bronchitis in March 2023. The Vatican has committed to being transparent about his health providing daily updates. However, the content and tone of these announcements have sparked speculation among observers.

A Saturday update from the Vatican indicated that while the Pope was alert and spent the day in an armchair, he remained “not out of danger” and was, in fact, “more unwell” than the previous day. His medical team confirmed he required blood transfusions due to a low platelet count related to anemia and needed a “high flow” of oxygen for respiratory support. They emphasized the complexity of his condition, noting that even minor changes could disrupt a “delicate balance.” “He is the Pope,” one doctor remarked, “but he is also a man.”

In his Sunday message, the Pope also took a moment to highlight the third anniversary of the war in Ukraine urging prayers for all victims of armed conflict and calling for peace in places such as Palestine, Israel, the Middle East, Myanmar, Kivu and Sudan.

The Angelus prayer is traditionally delivered by the Pope from the window of the Apostolic Palace at the Vatican, accompanied by a brief address. As the world holds its breath for his recovery, Pope Francis’s call for prayer underscores the deep connection between faith and healing during difficult times.

Residents discouraged from using National IDs as collateral security

Mbarara Resident City Commissioner (RCC) Catherine Kamwine has strongly cautioned residents against using their national identification cards as collateral for loans from money lenders.

This was during a meeting held at the RCC’s office in Mbarara City where national IDs were handed back to their rightful owners from money lenders. Kamwine urged citizens to explore government initiatives such as Emyooga, the Parish Development Model and the Youth Livelihood Programme instead of turning to high-interest money lenders.

“People should not risk their national IDs for short-term loans,” Kamwine stated. “There are safer and more sustainable options available through government projects.”

The RCC also addressed money lenders directly advising them to seek alternative forms of collateral and refrain from withholding national IDs from borrowers.

Supporting Kamwine’s stance, Elly Tubwine, the Regional Internal Security Officer for Mbarara condemned the practice of money lenders demanding original IDs as collateral. He warned that those found involved in such illegal activities would face arrest.

This press conference comes in response to numerous complaints received by the RCC’s office regarding money lenders who have been holding onto people’s national IDs leaving them in vulnerable situations. The officials’ actions reflect a growing concern over the safety and rights of citizens in financial transactions, and the importance of safeguarding personal identification documents from predatory practices.

The Deputy Resident District Commissioner for Ntungamo district, Rosemary Atuhaire urged local leaders to take proactive steps in ensuring that communities have access to clean and safe water.

Atuhaire highlighted the critical role that clean water plays in reducing disease outbreaks and enhancing productivity within communities. “Access to clean water is a fundamental right and crucial for the overall health of our population,” she stated.

Dr. Besigye Calls Off Hunger Strike After Arraignment on Treason Charges

Incarcerated veteran opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye has called off his hunger strike following his arraignment before the Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court on Friday, February 21, where he was charged with treason. His charges stem from an alleged abduction from Nairobi, Kenya, in November last year.

The four-time presidential contender had initiated the hunger strike over a week prior to protest his continued detention without a remand warrant. This move came after a landmark Supreme Court ruling on January 31, which halted the General Court Martial from trying civilians including Besigye and his aide, Hajj Obeid Lutale. The Supreme Court ordered an immediate transfer of civilian cases from military courts to regular courts.

However, delays in the government’s implementation of the Supreme Court ruling prompted Dr. Besigye’s protests. Speaking on behalf of Dr. Besigye, his lawyer and Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago stated, “Now that Dr. Besigye has been formally arraigned before the magistrate’s court on charges of treason, he has decided to call off the hunger strike since there’s now a valid remand warrant from this honourable court.” He added that Dr. Besigye was protesting against what he deemed illegal incarceration as there had been no pending charges against him until his recent arraignment.

Dr. Besigye, along with his aide Lutale and UPDF Capt. Dennis Oola were charged with treason and face an alternative charge of misprision of treason. The prosecution alleges that between 2023 and November 2024, the trio along with others still at large conspired to overthrow the Ugandan government by force, with locations including Geneva, Athens, Nairobi and Kampala cited in the charges.

In addition to his legal troubles, there are concerns for Dr. Besigye’s health prompting his legal team to proceed with a bail application. “We want the application to be filed today so that the ailing Dr. Besigye can access better medical care outside prison,” Lukwago confirmed.

Previously, Dr. Besigye and Lutale had been arraigned before the General Court Martial where they were charged with treachery and illegal possession of firearms. They declined to take a plea arguing that the military court lacked jurisdiction over civilians. The Supreme Court ruled in their favor leading to the current arraignment in civilian court.

In reaction to the Supreme Court ruling, President Yoweri Museveni and his son who is also the Commander of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, condemned the decision. Gen. Muhoozi has made inflammatory remarks on social media, calling for severe consequences for Dr. Besigye.

Dr. Besigye and Lutale had allegedly been abducted in Nairobi after attending a book launch for opposition leader Martha Karua. They were reportedly driven back to Uganda and detained at Makindye Military Barracks before being later charged.

Wafula Chebukati, former IEBC Chairman is dead

Wafula Wanyonyi Chebukati, the former chairman of Kenya’s Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), has died at the age of 63 after a long battle with a critical illness. He was declared clinically dead at a local hospital leaving his family to grapple with the heartbreaking decision of whether to discontinue life-support measures.

Chebukati’s career was marked by his commitment to electoral integrity and resilience particularly during tumultuous times. Appointed by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in 2017, he oversaw two landmark elections; those of 2017 and 2022 that significantly influenced Kenya’s political landscape. Remarkably, Chebukati became the first IEBC chair to complete a full six-year term retiring in January 2023 amidst challenges that included internal divisions and intense external scrutiny.

In a statement expressing his condolences, President William Ruto described Chebukati as a “principled and diligent leader who served the nation with integrity,” adding, “His death is a great loss to our country. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time.”

Born in 1961 in Bungoma County, Chebukati held a law degree from the University of Nairobi and earned a Master of Business Administration from Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology. He practiced law for over three decades, founding Wanyonyi & Company Advocates in 1986 before co-founding Cootow & Associates Advocates in 2006. He stepped away from private practice upon his appointment as IEBC chairman.

Chebukati’s tenure was not without its controversies. He presided over the 2017 presidential election, which was annulled by the Supreme Court, prompting a repeat election. His announcement of William Ruto as the President-elect in 2022 led to dissent within the commission with four commissioners vocally opposing his declaration. Amidst these challenges, he was recognized for his public service with the Elder of the Order of the Golden Heart (EGH), one of Kenya’s highest civilian honors.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Chebukati was a passionate golfer and held leadership positions at Mombasa and Nyali Golf Clubs as well as serving on the committee of the Kenya Golf Union.

Chebukati’s death is expected to prompt reflections on his legacy in Kenya’s electoral history as the nation considers the progress and obstacles facing its democratic processes. His family, colleagues and the broader community mourn the loss of a leader who tirelessly aimed to uphold the integrity of Kenya’s electoral system.
