Cameroon’s electoral body excludes Kamto, paves way for Biya

Cameroon’s electoral authorities have excluded Maurice Kamto, President Paul Biya’s primary challenger from the upcoming presidential race igniting fears of protests and increasing the likelihood of another victory for the long-standing incumbent.

During a news conference on Saturday, ELECAM, the electoral commission announced the list of 13 approved candidates which notably did not include Kamto. The commission did not provide specific reasons for his disqualification. Kamto, 71 had officially submitted his candidacy last week and was widely regarded as Biya’s strongest opposition in previous elections. In the 2018 presidential vote, Kamto finished second with 14 percent of the vote while Biya secured a decisive victory with over 70 percent amid allegations of electoral fraud and low voter turnout.

Kamto sought to run under the banner of the African Movement for New Independence and Democracy (MANIDEM) after previously contesting the 2018 election as the candidate of his own party, the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (MRC) established in 2012. This year, his candidacy was submitted through MANIDEM.

The announcement of the disqualification has sparked tensions with fears that it may trigger protests. Security measures have been heightened with forces deployed around ELECAM headquarters and along major roads in Yaoundé and Douala, Cameroon’s economic center. The United Nations Department of Safety and Security issued a warning on Friday cautioning that the announcement could lead to unrest in the capital.

The final list of presidential candidates is expected to be confirmed in the coming days after any appeals or challenges to the provisional list are addressed. A total of 83 candidates had initially been nominated for consideration.

President Paul Biya, aged 92, the world’s oldest serving head of state confirmed last month his intention to seek re-election on October 12 despite persistent rumors about his declining health. Having ruled Cameroon since 1982, Biya’s decades-long tenure has profoundly shaped the nation’s political landscape. His administration has faced numerous challenges including corruption allegations and a deadly secessionist conflict in English-speaking regions which has displaced thousands and disrupted education.

Among those approved to run alongside Biya are former Prime Minister Bello Bouba Maigari, a close ally for nearly three decades and Issa Tchiroma Bakary who resigned as employment minister in June to submit his candidacy. The upcoming election remains a critical event in Cameroon’s political trajectory amid ongoing tensions and uncertainties.

Wrestling Legend Hulk Hogan dies at 71

WWE icon and pop culture sensation Hulk Hogan has died at the age of 71. Emergency responders arrived at Hogan’s home in Clearwater around 10:00 a.m. local time (3 p.m. UK time) after he was treated for a cardiac arrest. He was rushed to hospital where he passed away approximately an hour and 15 minutes later according to police officials.

Hulk Hogan born Terry Bollea is widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in professional wrestling history. Known for his distinctive blonde mustache and colorful headbands, Hogan’s charisma and theatrical style helped elevate professional wrestling into a widely popular family entertainment sport.

He was a central figure in the inaugural WrestleMania in 1985 and remained a prominent presence in its marquee events for years facing legendary opponents such as André The Giant, Randy Savage, The Rock, and company chairman Vince McMahon. Hogan first claimed the WWE World Championship by defeating the Iron Sheik in 1984 and went on to win five additional titles during his career. In recognition of his contributions, he was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005 with Sylvester Stallone officiating the ceremony.

WWE issued a statement mourning the loss: “WWE is saddened to learn that WWE Hall of Fame Hulk Hogan has passed away. One of pop culture’s most recognizable figures Hogan helped WWE achieve global recognition in the 1980s. WWE extends its condolences to Hogan’s family, friends and fans.”

Tributes poured in from fellow wrestling legends and celebrities. Ric Flair, a close friend and fellow wrestler, expressed his shock on X: “I am absolutely shocked to hear about the passing of my close friend @HulkHogan! Hulk has been by my side since we started in the wrestling business. An incredible athlete, talent, friend, and father!”

Vince McMahon, WWE’s chairman, also paid homage: “The world lost a treasure today. Hulk Hogan was the greatest WWE Superstar of ALL TIME, loved and admired worldwide. He leaves us with his famous words, ‘Train, take your vitamins and say your prayers.’ Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”

The Undertaker, another wrestling legend, said, “The wrestling world has lost a true icon. His contributions to our business are immeasurable. Thank you, Hulk Hogan.”

Triple H reflected on Hogan’s legacy: “He was the archetype of what it meant to be a ‘Superstar’—a global sensation who inspired millions.”

Beyond wrestling, Hogan achieved celebrity status through numerous film and television appearances, including his role as Thunderlips in Rocky III and Shep Ramsey in Suburban Commando. He also starred in his own reality TV show, Hogan Knows Best.

In recent years, Hogan became involved in political endorsements notably supporting Donald Trump. In 2024, he appeared at the Republican National Convention donning a Trump tank top and rallying supporters with the phrase, “Let Trumpamania run wild, brother.”

His political support, however, sparked controversy especially after a 2012 Gawker video surfaced showing Hogan in a sexual encounter with his former best friend’s wife. Hogan sued for invasion of privacy and was awarded $140 million in damages in 2016. He also faced suspension from WWE in 2015 following the release of a recording in which he used a racial slur but was reinstated in 2018.

Born in Georgia in August 1953, Hogan initially played bass guitar in local bands before entering professional wrestling in Florida during the 1970s. He became famous for his muscular physique, famously dubbed the “24-inch pythons,” and adopted the moniker “Hulk” inspired by comic book heroes which later led to royalties paid to Marvel Comics.

Hogan was married three times and had two children. According to Clearwater Police Major Nate Burnside, there are no signs of foul play or suspicious activity related to his death and his family is receiving support during this difficult time.

Hulk Hogan’s legacy as a wrestling superstar and cultural icon leaves an indelible mark on the sport and entertainment world.

Former Labour Party leader, Corbyn announces formation of new political party

Former Labour Party leader, Jeremy Corbyn has announced the formation of a new political party intended to operate to the left of the Labour Party. The party which is yet to be officially named was temporarily dubbed “Your Party” on its website but is not called that officially according to Member of Parliament Zarah Sultana.

Corbyn and Sultana both of whom became independents after leaving Labour Party revealed their plans in a joint statement on Thursday emphasizing the need for “a new kind of political party” dedicated to addressing social injustices and challenging a “rigged” system they say favors the wealthy and powerful. The statement condemned the current government’s prioritization of military spending over social welfare and called for a “mass redistribution of wealth and power,” along with support for Palestinian independence.

The new party aims to be rooted in local communities, trade unions and social movements with supporters encouraged to participate in the founding process. An inaugural conference is scheduled to determine the party’s leadership, structure and policies.

Details about the party’s timeline remain unclear but the announcement arrives amid ongoing criticism of Labour leader Keir Starmer who has struggled to maintain support following Labour’s historic victory over the Conservatives last year. Starmer has faced particular criticism for his handling of welfare reform and for failing to unify the party around key legislative initiatives including efforts to reduce welfare spending.

Corbyn, who led Labour from 2015 until his resignation following a poor showing in the 2019 general election remains a prominent figure on the UK left. The 76-year-old was suspended from Labour in 2020 after he declined to fully accept findings of an internal probe into anti-Semitism allegations during his leadership an issue he has repeatedly denied was exaggerated for political reasons.

Meanwhile, Sultana, representing a younger generation of left-wing MPs was suspended from the Labour Party in 2024 after opposing a cap on benefits for families with more than two children. She has been a vocal critic of austerity measures and a supporter of Palestinian rights.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sultana clarified that the new party is not called “Your Party,” addressing some confusion among supporters and observers.

As the UK political landscape continues to evolve, the emergence of this new party could mark a significant realignment on the left challenging Labour’s recent centrist shift and appealing to voters seeking a more radical alternative.

Speaking to the press yesterday in Mbarara city, Ruteraaho, a former Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Kagadi district voiced her dissatisfaction with what she described as internal sabotage from within the party. Ruteraho received a total of 67,454 votes, accounting for 46.1% of the total votes cast. She narrowly defeated her closest rival former Isingiro District Woman MP Justin Ayebazibwe Kashaija who garnered 41,441 votes (28.3%). The incumbent, Claire Mugumya trailed with 13,351 votes representing 9.1%.

The final results were officially announced by Dr. Tanga Odoi, Chairperson of the NRM Electoral Commission at the party offices in Kampala, on Tuesday night.

Despite her victory, Ruteraho’s comments highlight ongoing tensions and allegations of irregularities within the party’s primary process raising questions about the transparency and fairness of the nomination proceedings in Isingiro.
