Kazo: SAGE beneficiaries challenged by Long distance to access payment.

By Racheal Nuwahereza

The Social Assistance Grants for Empowerment (SAGE) beneficiaries from Kazo town council and Kazo Sub-county have this Wednesday received their payment at centenary bank cash point held at St. Johns church of Uganda in Kazo district.

A section of the beneficiaries have raised complaints about the pick-up point for this money being far away from their homes; adding that it is unfair to ask them to travel long distances of more than 3 kilometers to access payment.

The beneficiaries who were initially receiving UGX 25,000 per month but have this Wednesday received UGX 150,000 for three months.

The beneficiaries also argued that because of increased fuel prices, their transport costs are extremely high nowadays and higher than the money they receive.

They have appealed to the government to bring this service of payments to their villages and parishes.

Beneficiaries of SAGE scheme line-up for their grant money in Kazo district on Wednesday.

Mugisha Benjamin, the councilor representing Kazo sub-county elders who doubles as the chairman elders Kazo also expressed his dissatisfaction about the long queues and the slow system used to give out money yet the people are too old.

Mugisha added that the beneficiaries were subjected to travelling long distances, high costs of transport and moving on boda bodas.

Dan Bwamunyoga, the district speaker Kazo thanked the government for giving the elderly people upkeep.

Bwamunyoga also observed that the beneficiaries faced the challenge of travelling long distances to get the money.

He promised that authorities from the district will write to Ministry of Gender, Labor and Social development to consider paying the elders from their villages or parishes.

In June 2015, the Ministry of Gender, Labour & Social Development made a decision to reach the vulnerable and often excluded sections of the population to achieve inclusive pro-poor, and equitable development.

In Uganda, Senior Citizens were the first target group through a Social Assistance Grants for Empowerment (SAGE) Scheme targeting older persons of 65 years and above under the Expanding Social Protection Programme.

This was aimed at enabling them to access basic services, and to start income generating activities.

Mali military promises return to civilian rule in March 2024

Mali’s military rulers have proposed the restoration of civilian rule in two years, following an August 2020 coup and a failure to meet an earlier deadline for elections that led to crippling sanctions.

Military leader Colonel Assimi Goita signed a decree read out on state television on Monday saying that the duration of the transition is fixed at 24 months (from) March 26, 2022.

The military seized power in an initial coup in August 2020 and failed to deliver on a promise to hold elections in February, prompting sanctions from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

Goita forced out an interim civilian government in May last year, taking over the presidency.

ECOWAS did not immediately comment on the 24-month decree adopted on Monday.

The length of the transition has also caused a rift with Mali’s partners, including the United States and former colonial power France.

West African heads of state met in Ghana’s capital Accra over the weekend to discuss the situation and agreed not to lift sanctions, which include border closures and restrictions on financial transactions, unless interim leaders proposed a shorter transition.

The leaders are expected to convene for another summit before July 3, 2022.

KIU Final Year Student Saved from Missing Exam, gets Support from Dolphin Funds

By Racheal Nuwahereza

A final year student from Kampala International University (KIU) identified as Mubiru Henry, pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery is among the many Ugandans whose life has been positively transformed by Airtel’s Uganda Needs More campaign that was launched at the start of March 2022.

Mubiru was able to get financial support through a crowdfunding website founded by Dickson Mushabe. The website is a community-driven platform that enables individuals and organizations to raise funds for worthy causes.

“I saw Uganda Needs More of You Campaign by Airtel Uganda and opened a link on Dolphin Funds, and requested friends and family to support me by contributing towards my tuition. I had failed to raise tuition worth UGX 4m for my final year exams that are approaching in June. I was at the verge of not graduating but am glad that I will be seating for my exams starting 13th June,” said Mubiru.

The campaign encourages Ugandans to share stories of how they have leveraged technology to positively impact themselves and their communities.

David Birungi, the Public Relations Manager at Airtel Uganda said they are impressed with the success stories that Ugandans all over the country have so far shared on how they have used the power of technology to impact their society. Adding that, they appreciate them for submitting their stories on the Airtel Mobisite on www.airtel.co.ug/UgneedsmoreofU via SMS (162) or by calling 162.

Some of the televised stories that are being featured currently include Ella Foods, a Small Medium Enterprise (SME) in the Hospitality sector that enhanced technology to adapt to a new service delivery approach using a mobile phone. The second story is that of Rocket Health, a telemedicine service provider, and Dolphin Funds, a crowdfunding website.

“Currently, we have received over 10,000 submissions, an indication that Ugandans are keenly interested in participating in the campaign. We are almost approaching the selection phase where our Judges will be reviewing the first set of stories. However, the campaign is still running and it will be a televised series broadcast on select media houses,” said Birungi.

Five (5) stories will be vetted on a monthly basis, and the top 3 will be selected to proceed to the final stage. The final transformative stories will receive financial support for their causes.

The submitted stories will be vetted by a jury that will comprise of 2 external judges and 2 representatives from Airtel Uganda. The external judges include; Dr. Maggie Kigozi, the Chairperson of Africa Scout Foundation, and Mr. Maurice Mugisha, Deputy Managing Director, UBC TV.

“We know that there are still numerous changemakers who have positively embraced the digital shift and are influencing their communities in different aspects, that is why we are calling upon them to continue sharing their stories so that we can recognize them,” Birungi concluded.
