Over 50 households from Ryanyamihondo village, Swazi Parish in Kyamuhunga sub-county are on the verge of starvation after a heavy rains accompanied by hailstorms destroyed their plantations and gardens.

The Friday evening rains that lasted for close to three hours left several gardens of rice, beans, cassava, maize, tea, and banana plantations destroyed, raising concerns of potential food scarcity in the near future.

Pastori Tumwesigye, the vice chairperson LC I Ryanyamihondo village who was also affected, appealed to the government and well-wishers to provide the farmers with food relief and seeds because of the looming famine.

The area LC I chairperson, Byoona Apulinali said that the area is likely to be hit by famine if no immediate attention is accorded to them.

Imelda Tumusiime, the district woman councilor representing people of Kyamuhunga Sub-County and town council said the hailstorm didn’t affect residents of Ryanyamihondo only but other areas of Katiima, and Kazigangoma in Swazi parish were all affected by the rains.
