Over 100 Killed in Gunmen Attack in Benue State, Nigeria

At least 100 people have been killed following an overnight attack by gunmen in Yelwata, a town in Benue State, north-central Nigeria, Amnesty International reported. The assault which lasted from late Friday into Saturday morning has sparked outrage amid ongoing violence in the region.

Amnesty International condemned the escalation of attacks across Benue highlighting that gunmen operate with impunity causing mass displacement and threatening food security as many victims are farmers. The rights group urged the Nigerian government to take immediate action to end the bloodshed which has resulted in numerous deaths and missing persons.

Tersoo Kula, spokesperson for the state governor’s office stated that the attack lasted about two hours with several houses burned. He confirmed that authorities and police visited Yelwata and reported a lower death toll of 45. However, locals fear the death toll exceeds 100 with witnesses describing widespread violence and destruction.

Resident Amineh Liapha Hir said many had died and houses were burned down while Christian Msuega recounted escaping the attack but losing relatives to the flames. Clashes between herders mainly Muslim Fulani and farmersmostly Christians over land and water access have fueled ongoing violence in the region. Last month, gunmen believed to be herders killed at least 20 people in Gwer West, Benue.

Arts’ Teachers in Sheema District Intensify Strike

Arts teachers under their umbrella Uganda Professional Humanities Teachers Union (UPHTU) have escalated their ongoing strike over inadequate remuneration and significant salary disparities compared to their science counterparts.

The teachers officially suspended classroom activities on May 22, 2025 citing continued marginalization by the government. Their protests reached a peak on June 12, 2025 when they demonstrated in the streets of Kabwohe Town in Sheema Municipality calling for urgent government intervention.

According to Ahebwa Enock, UPHTU chairperson for Sheema District, arts teachers have received only a 26% salary increase, a stark contrast to the 76% increment awarded to science teachers. During the demonstration, the teachers resolved to remain at home and abstain from all school-related duties including teaching, coaching sports and training students in music, dance and drama (MDD) until their demands are addressed.

“Our members have been sidelined for too long. We need fair treatment and equal pay to motivate our arts educators and ensure quality education for our students.”

The teachers also demanded that the government improve salaries for non-teaching staff such as school cooks, secretaries, bursars and librarians, emphasizing the vital roles these support staff play in daily school operations.

Musokye Henry, UPHTU’s Publicity Secretary in Sheema District, voiced frustration over the government’s failure to honor the 2018 Collective Bargaining Agreement which stipulated phased salary increases for teachers. He also highlighted the emotional toll the ongoing strike has taken on students especially those pursuing arts subjects who now face an uncertain academic future.

As the strike continues, stakeholders await a government response to address these grievances and restore normalcy in Sheema’s schools.

Bushenyi RDC Cautions Arts Teachers Over Protest Tactics Amid Strike

Bushenyi district Resident District Commissioner(RDC), Emmy Ngabirano has issued a warning to arts and humanities teachers who are intimidating colleagues who wish to resume teaching. Arts and humanities teachers under the Uganda Professional Humanity Teachers Union (UPHTU) continue their industrial action over inadequate remuneration which has gone into day two.

The strike, led by humanities and arts teachers from tertiary institutions stems from ongoing salary disparities and what they describe as neglect by the government. The teachers are demanding better pay and improved working conditions.

In an interview with our reporter, Ngabirano emphasized that while teachers have the right to express their grievances, they should also respect the rights of colleagues who choose to continue working. He urged protesters to avoid harassment or forcing others to join the strike highlighting the importance of maintaining the continuity of essential services such as education.

The RDC acknowledged the government’s efforts to find a resolution to the ongoing strike but urged all parties to reflect on balancing legitimate workers’ concerns with keeping educational institutions operational.

As the situation unfolds, stakeholders continue to call for dialogue and solutions that address teachers’ welfare while ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of education in the region.
