Kazo: One arrested for kidnapping a one day old baby

Police in Kazo have arrested one suspect in connection with the kidnap of a one day old baby from Kyenshebashebe-Ntambazi parish, Kazo Sub-county, Kazo district on Sunday.

John Lukooto, the Kazo district Police Commander (DPC) confirmed the incident and identified the suspect as Twinamatsiko Hope.

Twinamatsiko reportedly connived with the woman who took the baby.

Ninsiima Joviitah, the mother to this baby says that another suspect (who is still at large) went to her home and asked to take them to the hospital to give them help of food and money.

Ninsiima says that she then called two boda bodas; one carried the mother of the baby while another carried the suspect with the baby.

Ninsiima adds that while on their way, the suspect directed the boda boda man to ride towards Ibanda leaving the mother on the way to Kazo health centre IV where upon reaching, the woman who had carried the baby was nowhere to be seen.

Kamazoba Leonard, the grandmother to the baby revealed that the suspect came to their home and offered to take all mothers with newly born babies to hospital for help.

Laurence Twinamatsiko , the chairman of LC I Kyenshebashebe cell who condemned the act said that he got information from his defence after church service and asked the security to intervene in this matter and bring the suspect to book.

Lukooto noted that investigations into the matter are still on-going.

Three arrested for murder

Police in Sheema have arrested three people on allegations of murder.

Marcial Tumusiime, the greater Bushenyi police spokesperson confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Moses Twinomujuni, 43, a resident of Rubanga cell, Kiziba Parish, Kagango division, Sheema District.

The arrested suspects have been identified as Oshea Biryabarema, Gereshom Kagarura and Francis Mushabe.

It’s alleged that the deceased was killed after he was suspected to have stolen Matooke and a bicycle all belonging to a one Biryabarema.

Kazo: Residents decry rampant theft

Residents of Kazo town council in Kazo district have expressed concerns about increased rampant cases of theft in town.

Mwesigye Edson, a resident and landlord in Byeshembe cell, Kazo Town council revealed that on Thursday night, thieves broke into one of the rooms rented by lawyer Enock Tumwine and made off with television and many other items.

Asingwire Apollo, a bar owner also revealed that on Thursday night, thieves broke into the bar and walked away with most of his belongings such as TV sets, bottles of alcohol and an unspecified amount of money.

Asingwire noted that these unknown thieves target when electricity is off.

By press time, police had not given a comment about these reports.

Kazo: ICWEA calls for more sensitization about HIV

International Community of Women living with HIV Eastern Africa -ICWEA has called for need to strengthen the services rendered to people living with HIV in Kazo District.

The call was made during the meeting between the officials from the ICWEA NGO and representatives from 4 selected health centres of Kazo HCIV, Kanoni HCIII, Engari Community HCIII and Lamezia HCIII in Burunga together with the officials from Kazo District Health Department that took place at Kan House Conference hall in Kazo Town council on Wednesday.

Oryeki Sam, the ICWEA monitor for Kazo district, says they started executing their activities in May 2022 and that the relevant beneficiaries are benefiting.

Ndyahika Dickson, the coordinator Mbarara Region, revealed that there is lack of truthful information and a lot of it dates back especially about HIV and TB for instance in terms of prevention, citing the availability of post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission (PMTCT), among others but he noted that the knowledge about them is scarce.

Ndyahika also noted that there is lack of enough medical personnel, and the ones available are overwhelmed by the huge population which results in several challenges like the delay of viral load test results and the inability of children to suppress the virus.

Ndyahika added that in case they get enough equipment and funding, they will move their service to other health centres in the district.

The International Community of Women living with HIV Eastern Africa is a regional advocacy network and membership based organization which exists to give visibility to women living with HIV in Eastern Africa. ICWEA believes that gender inequalities and the lack of sexual & reproductive health & rights for women are at the heart of the HIV epidemic.

55 year old man strangled to death

Police in Sheema district are investigating circumstances under which a 55 year old man was reportedly strangled to death.

Martial Tumusiime, the greater Bushenyi region police spokesperson confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Joseph Mwerwaneho alias kikwine a resident of katwe cell kyabandaala ward, Sheema central division in Sheema district.

It is alleged that during Wednesday night, the deceased Mwerwaneho was attacked from his house by unknown people who strangled him to death.

The following morning at around 8 am, Twinomugisha Jolly, a friend to the deceased together with her daughter, a one Moreen came to pick clothes at Mwerwaneho’ s house but found the door locked from outside and the window open, tried to call him but no response.

Tumusiime said that Twinomugisha alerted the neighbours and on peeping through the window, they saw a dead body of Mwerwaneho with a rope besides him.

He added that the deceased’s body had marks around the neck and although his body was found lying down on the mattress with no rope around the neck but a piece of rope was found lying besides the body and another piece tied up on the roof pole.

The body of the deceased has been conveyed to Kabwohe Health Centre IV for postmortem and some suspects have been tracked by a sniffer dog arrested to assist police with investigations.

Kitagwenda: Residents demonstrate against the poor state of roads

Residents of Nyabitooma cell in Kagazi Ward, Kabujogera Town council in Kitagwenda District have today staged a peaceful demonstration and camped at Town council headquarters protesting the poor state of roads in the area.

Irahuka Seregio, the chairperson LC1 Nyabitooma cell said the road is currently in sorry state and the Town council Authorities are not doing much to rescue them from the current situation.

A section of residents who talked to our reporter accused the Town council chairperson Buganda Joseph Ruweza of being arrogant and undermining them.

Locals led by Tesigye Patrick, Mugisha Vicent Tooto, Bakyenga Christopher ,Herbert
Kasabule and Kahoza Ndyabarema among others said that are currently blocked from accessing essential services from the neighbouring Ibanda District.

Komugisha Jeniva, one of the residents revealed that as mothers they have been getting immunization and antenatal services from Ibanda District but now they are blocked since the road that connects them to Ibanda is now in sorry state.

In a bid to calm down the aggrieved reasidents, Bwambale Benard, the Town clerk Kabujogera Town council urged them to calm down and pledged to work hand in hand with
District leaders to restore the situation very soon.

Kazo: Two cattle thieves arrested

Police in Kazo in conjunction with the Ibanda Police have arrested two suspected cattle thieves.

John Lukooto, the District Police Commander (DPC) Kazo District has confirmed the development and identified the suspects as Lukwago Eddy aka Tumwiine, 42, and Ainebyoona Nicholas.

According to Lukooto, the suspects were intercepted by the police from Ibanda after getting tipped off by the concerned residents of Rwemengo parish in Kanoni sub-county.

Samuel Mugisha Katugunda the chairman LC V told journalists that several farmers in the entire district have lost animals like cows, goats pigs to these animal thieves and the crack down continues.

Katugunda asked the area residents to be vigilant and ensure that they work together to protect their animals from these thieves.

Lukooto revealed that the suspects will be charged in courts of law and the search for other cattle thieves continues.

LC5 Chairman wanted for aggravated defilement.

The Directorate of CID is actively investigating circumstances under which a 16-year-old, female juvenile and Secondary School Student was an allegedly defiled.

Police have launched a manhunt for the suspect identified as Chelimo Julius, the Chairman LC V, Bukwo district on charges of Aggravated Defilement and subsequent acts of Aggravated Trafficking of a 16-year-old, student in one of the schools in Sebei region.

According to a statement by Fred Enanga, the Police Spokesperson the facts gathered indicate that the victim left her parents’ home in Bukwo on the 28^th November 2021, and came for holidays in Kampala.

“While in Kampala, she went and visited a friend called Amidu Anthony, where she was lured into a friendship, by the suspect Chelimo Julius, the LC5 Chairman Bukwo district,” read the statement in part.

Enanga revealed that on the 6^th May 2022, the victim was picked by a one Amisi Latif, at Usafi market and linked up with the suspect who was meeting the victim at Shell Petrol Station in Kireka. He further transported them to Mbale, where the two (suspects and victim) slept at Starlight Hotel.

“On 7^th May 2022, the victim managed to sneak out of the Hotel and travelled back to her parents home in Bukwo. Again, on the 18^th May 2022, her disappearance was caused from their home, and traced to the home of Chesang Doreen, a relative to the suspect and reunited with her family,” said Enanga.

The statement further reveals that between May 2022 and August 2022, the suspect would occasionally pick up the victim, take her to a lodge and drop her home later.

Enanga applauded the officers for their efforts and courage while tackling sexual assaults by high profile suspects emphasizing that Uganda police maintains its zero tolerance for all acts sexual violence against vulnerable persons.

Enanga added that the victim is currently under the protection and care, of the Sexual and Gender Based Violence Unit of CID Headquarters.

William Ruto sworn in as 5th president of Kenya

Thousands of Kenyans from across the country have today gathered at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, Nairobi County to witness the Swearing in ceremony of Dr William Ruto as the country’s fifth President.

National and County leaders from across the country, diplomats from across the world and several heads of state including; Yoweri Museveni, the President of Uganda, Tanzania president Samia Suluhu, Rwanda president Paul Kagame, Ethiopia prime minister Abiy Mohammed among others graced H.E Ruto’s swearing in ceremony.

The swearing-in and inauguration kicked off with the entry of President Uhuru Kenyatta aboard the Commander-in-Chief ceremonial vehicle, after which he inspected a full parade mounted by the Kenya Defence Forces under Lt-Col Gilbert Kinanga’s command.

At exactly 12:44pm, Dr William Ruto took oath as the President of Kenya followed by Rigathi Gachagua as his Deputy President.

The swearing-in process was led by the Judiciary under Chief Justice Martha Koome and Judiciary registrar Anne Amadi.

After he took the oath of office, President William Ruto received instruments of power from H.E Uhuru Kenyatta, the Former president of Kenya.

H.E Ruto was then welcomed as the new President and Commander-in-Chief with a 21-gun salute by the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF).

During his maiden speech, H.E Ruto said: “Our immediate focus is lowering the cost of living by empowering food producers, creating jobs for our young people, creating a favourable environment for enterprise and empowering independent institutions.”

H.E Ruto also appreciated the fact that Kenya is host to major international agencies, including the United Nations and pledged that during his reign as president, Kenya will continue playing its key role in international diplomacy at the bilateral and multilateral levels.

“Kenya will continue to be a dedicated partner to peace, security and prosperity in the East African region. We look forward to deepening our integration,” said Ruto.

Bushenyi: Seven boreholes worth UGX 292.9 Million commissioned.

Atuhairwe Robert, the new Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Bushenyi presided over the commissioning in of the seven boreholes in seven sub counties in Bushenyi district.

Speaking during the commissioning functions at Rwenyena primary school in Kitagata, Kyeizooba Sub-county in Igara East constituency and at Kabande Primary school in Nkanga sub-county in Igara west constituency, Atuhairwe commended the current regime for bringing services near to the people and urged the communities to use the boreholes to promote proper sanitation and hygiene in their localities.

Atuhairwe noted that with proper hygiene and adaption of government programs like Parish Development Model, disease will be minimized and communities will attain economic development.

At Rwenyena Primary school where the borehole was constructed, Tumwebaze Robina, the Principal Assistant Secretary Bushenyi district local government noted that government will not realize its intended objective of providing the water source to the school and the nearby communities because the school’s enrollment is still low with is only 165 pupils.

Tumwebaze called upon the schools’ management, PTA and the parents to mobilize more pupils for the schools adding that it’s their sole responsibility to ensure that the schools have many children and government’s responsibility is to provide services.

Victor Kahangye, the district Water Engineer asked the schools and the benefiting communities to ensure that they support the water user committees for sustainability of the bore holes.

Other boreholes were constructed at Nyakabingo in Kakanju, Kayengo in Bitooma, Nyamyerande in Ruhumuro, Nyarurambi trading centre in Ibaare and Kahungye in Nyabubare.
