Police in Rubirizi district are investigating a high-profile robbery case involving a local businessman who claims to have been robbed of Shs500million by masked assailants.

According to the Greater Bushenyi Regional Acting Police Spokesperson, SP Apollo Tayebwa, the suspect, identified as Kiiza Robert, 38, a Mufumbira from Buhera Central, Nyakashaaru Ward in Rubirizi Town Council was detained on June 11, 2025 after inconsistencies emerged in his account of the incident.

Kiiza reportedly told police that on June 9, 2025, at around 4:00 p.m.was ambushed by four unidentified masked men while traveling in an omnibus vehicle locally known as a drone near Enkombe Forest in Rubirizi District. He claimed that the assailants robbed him of the Shs500 million he was transporting to Ishaka-Bushenyi where he planned to spend the night before depositing the money the following day.

However, during police investigations, detectives identified several discrepancies in Kiiza’s statements, prompting their immediate action. He was detained for further questioning, and a search of his belongings yielded Shs118,025,000 in cash, which has been secured as part of the ongoing probe.

Authorities have not yet confirmed whether the recovered money is related to the alleged robbery or if other motives are at play.

Police in Kanungu district are investigating the mysterious death of Ian Kwikiriza, 21, a casual labourer and resident of Kembeho Cell, Kashuri Parish, Kambuga Sub County.

According to reports, the incident occurred on June 11, 2025 at approximately 11:30 a.m. when Vicencio Mbonimpa, a local resident, received a phone call from Kenneth Turinawe who informed him that goats were still at home and that the person responsible for herding them was not attending to them.

Turinawe with his mother went to check on Kwikiriza at his residence and found him still sleeping inside. Noticing this was unusual they knocked on the door which was locked from the inside. When there was no response, they forced entry into the house and discovered Ian lying face down on his mattress.

The duo immediately informed Kwikiriza’s employer, Mbonimpa who then reported the matter to local authorities.

The Kigezi region police spokesperson, Elly Mate confirmed this revealing that during scene inspection, authorities found a small bottle labeled “Striker,” a pesticide, near Kwikiriza’s bed, along with vomit on the mattress which raised suspicions that the death may have been self-inflicted.

The police have not yet issued an official statement regarding the cause of death, and investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding this tragic incident.

Police in Kisoro district have arrested 24-year-old Andrew Kwizera in connection with the murder of his mother, Molly Nyirabirihanze,72. The incident occurred during the night of June 11, 2025, at their residence in Rukoro village, Rukoro ward, Kyanika town council.

It is alleged that on the night of the incident, a domestic dispute erupted between Kwizera and his wife. During the altercation, the suspect’s mother intervened to rescue her daughter-in-law. According to reports, as she approached to assist, Kwizera picked up a stick and struck her on the head causing deep injuries and significant bleeding which likely led to her death.

Elly Mate, the Police spokesperson for Kigezi region confirmed the incident and revealed that police has registered a murder case and responded promptly to the scene. The crime scene was visited, processed, and documented. ”Eye witnesses recorded statements and the murder weapon; a blood-stained wooden stickwas recovered as evidence. The deceased’s body was transported to Kisoro Hospital for a postmortem examination and was subsequently handed over to relatives for a proper burial”.

Police in Rubirizi District are investigating an incident involving the alleged attempted murder of Porutazio Kasimbura, 48. The incident reportedly occurred in the district prompting quick action from law enforcement authorities.

Apollo Tayebwa, the acting Police spokesperson for the Greater Bushenyi region confirmed the incident and identified the suspect as Naziru Bataringaya, 19 a resident of Kyenzaza 1B village, Kyenzaza parish, Kirugu sub-county.

Tayebwa stated that police responded swiftly to the scene arresting Bataringaya who allegedly attacked Kasimbura by cutting him multiple times on the head and hand. Residents at the scene intervened to rescue the victim and rushed him to Kampala International University Hospital in Ishaka for treatment.

Police spokesperson strongly urged members of the public to avoid taking the law into their own hands. He emphasized the importance of reporting disputes and misunderstandings to authorities for proper resolution.

Tayebwa added that once sufficient evidence is gathered to support charges, the suspect will be presented before the courts for attempted murder, ensuring justice is served lawfully.

Bushenyi district Resident District Commissioner(RDC), Emmy Ngabirano has issued a warning to arts and humanities teachers who are intimidating colleagues who wish to resume teaching. Arts and humanities teachers under the Uganda Professional Humanity Teachers Union (UPHTU) continue their industrial action over inadequate remuneration which has gone into day two.

The strike, led by humanities and arts teachers from tertiary institutions stems from ongoing salary disparities and what they describe as neglect by the government. The teachers are demanding better pay and improved working conditions.

In an interview with our reporter, Ngabirano emphasized that while teachers have the right to express their grievances, they should also respect the rights of colleagues who choose to continue working. He urged protesters to avoid harassment or forcing others to join the strike highlighting the importance of maintaining the continuity of essential services such as education.

The RDC acknowledged the government’s efforts to find a resolution to the ongoing strike but urged all parties to reflect on balancing legitimate workers’ concerns with keeping educational institutions operational.

As the situation unfolds, stakeholders continue to call for dialogue and solutions that address teachers’ welfare while ensuring the uninterrupted delivery of education in the region.

Representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries convened a one-day workshop at Kazo District Headquarters to discuss strategies for enhancing the Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) Transformation Project. The meeting brought together Senior District Officers (CDOs); veterinary doctors and agriculture officers from various Sub counties to explore ways to boost the program’s impact.

The project was launched in 2022 across 69 districts nationwide, the Project was selectively implemented in five districts within Western Uganda including Kazo, Isingiro, Sheema, Kiruhura, and Mitooma. The initiative aims to empower local farmers with sustainable farming practices that increase productivity while combating climate change.

Dr. Grace Asiimwe from the Ministry emphasized that the program is designed to help farmers boost their income through activities such as bull fattening, coffee growing and beekeeping. She urged participants to champion the project within their communities.

Asiimwe John Baptist Kururagire, the District Principle Agriculture Officer called on workshop attendees to carry forward the message of development and ensure the adoption of climate-smart practices among the farmers they serve.

Attendees, including Akamutuha Immaculate and Tumuhairwe Bruno expressed commitment to implementing the ideas shared and to promote the principles of climate-smart agriculture in their respective subcounties.

The workshop marked a crucial step toward strengthening agricultural resilience and improving livelihoods in Western Uganda through sustainable practices.

Police in Rubirizi District have launched investigations into a case of aggravated defilement involving a 14-year-old juvenile and her biological father.

The incident reportedly occurred on June 4, 2025 in Nyakihanda Village, Butoha Parish, Magambo Sub-county. The suspect, Julius Nyesiga, 37, has been identified as the father of the victim and is said to have been living with the girl’s family.

Apollo Tayebwa, the acting Greater Bushenyi police spokesperson confirmed the incident and stated that police have already apprehended Nyesiga. “We are currently investigating the matter thoroughly. The juvenile has undergone a medical examination to determine her health status and gather evidence necessary for prosecution,” Tayebwa explained.

He added that police are continuing with their investigations and are committed to ensuring justice is served. The suspect remains in custody as the case progresses.

Authorities have called for community support in handling such sensitive cases and emphasized their commitment to protecting minors from abuse.

Members of the Kazo District Local Government, Members of Parliament and community supporters convened yesterday at Buremba Secondary School’s main hall for a crucial reconciliation meeting.

The gathering was led by Kato Paul Rubarenzya, the newly elected NRM Chairman for Buremba Town Council. During the meeting, Kato urged his supporters and those of his rival, Nasasira Emmanuel Magango to set aside electoral disputes and focus on the developmental progress of Buremba. “Let us settle our differences, clear our minds and work together to elevate Buremba Town Council to new heights,” Kato emphasized.

Magango who contested against Kato for the same leadership position expressed his commitment to unity and pledged support for the newly elected chairman. “Our shared goal is peace and development. I am ready to work with Kato to bring positive change to Buremba,” Magango stated.

Supporters from both sides also expressed their willingness to maintain peace and support the area’s growth. Fred Ruhambana and Michael Mugume representing the supporters assured their dedication to fostering harmony and embracing development initiatives.

The National Drug Authority (NDA) has announced the arrest of Tumusiime Harriet an enrolled comprehensive nurse during an intelligence-led operation. The nurse was apprehended in possession of and suspected of selling government-marked medicines and medical devices which are not for sale.

Abiaz Rwamwiri, the NDA Spokesperson confirmed the arrest and provided details about Tumusiime’s background. He stated that she is a resident of Alliance, Kakooba in Mbarara City.

According to Rwamwiri, through intelligence investigations, Tumusiime was found in possession of various government-marked medicines and medical items including cardiac aspirin, labor-inducing drugs for women, multivitamins for malnourished children, malaria testing kits and surgical gloves. These items are clearly marked as government property and are not authorized for sale.

Rwamwiri further revealed that the suspect is believed to be working with Rubaya Health Center II in Kashari county Mbarara district and operates a private drug shop in Mbarara City where she was found selling these government medicines unlawfully.

Tumusiime appeared before Mbarara Grade I Magistrate yesterday and was remanded until July 1 when her case will be scheduled for hearing.

This arrest is part of the NDA’s ongoing crackdown on the theft and illegal sale of government drugs. Since March 2024, the authority has recovered government medicines valued at over 6 billion Ugandan shillings.

The NDA urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious drug-related activities to authorities to help curb the illegal trade in government medicines.

Teachers and pupils at Rwenjeru Primary School in Bushenyi Ishaka Municipality have raised concerns over the sharing of pit latrines citing safety and hygiene issues. The concerns were voiced by the school headteacher, Scovia Kamayangi during the handover of 14 twin desks donated by the municipality held at the school premises.

Kamayangi explained that the newly constructed latrine is located far from the school making it insecure and inconvenient for learners and staff. As a result, pupils have had to abandon the new latrine and continue sharing an old pit latrine raising fears over sanitation and safety.

She also noted that despite government efforts to deploy enough staff, the school’s enrollment remains low with over 130 pupils currently enrolled. Kamayangi appealed for additional support to improve facilities and increase student numbers.

Milton Betungura, the Deputy Mayor of Bushenyi Ishaka Municipality responded to the concerns by urging the school management to focus on improving academic performance. He attributed the low student turnout partly to poor academic results and called on parents to support the school actively.

Betungura emphasized the importance of maintaining the furniture provided by the government and urged the school management to take ownership and ensure proper upkeep so the furniture can serve their intended purpose.

Adrine Kyosimire, the Lady Councilor representing Rwenjeru in Mazinga Ward credited the achievements to the cooperation between elected leaders and the community. She appealed for continued support to enhance the school’s facilities and performance.

The ongoing concerns highlight the need for improved infrastructure and community engagement to boost enrollment and ensure a safe, conducive learning environment at Rwenjeru Primary School.
