Kazo: Teachers asked to be patient for salary increment.

The State minister for Education and Sports Hon Peter Ogwang has asked the teachers to be patient and work hard so that the government can increase their salary.

Ogwang made the remarks while officiating the commemoration of World Teachers Day in Kazo district held at Compassion Hall in Kazo Town council.

Ogwang’s remarks followed the request by Mugabe Medard, the secretary of Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU) Kazo district branch, who while representing the UNATU chairman informed the minister that they also want their salary increased just like science teachers.

Hon. Dan Kimosho, the Member of Parliament representing Kazo constituency appreciated Hon Ogwang for honouring his invitation and accepting to be the guest of honour for this ceremony.

Kimosho appreciated the teachers and identified them as heroes of this country and made a contribution of UGX 2m towards the teachers’ SACCO.

Ogwang also announced a UGX 10m contribution from Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Among and his own contribution of UGX 5m towards the Teachers’ SACCO in Kazo district.

Rev Samuel Mugisha Katugunda, the chairman LC IV Kazo district condemned the act of school head teachers who deny learners in government schools a chance to study and even send them back home for school fees.

Katugunda also contributed UGX 200,000 towards the Teachers’ SACCO in Kazo district.

Agume Robert, the Kazo District Education Officer (DEO) also noted that they are hopeful that the minister will table the issues of teachers’ salary increment.

Mugabe revealed that despite the minister’s reaction, they have hopes that their issue of salary increment which they presented will be put under positive consideration.

In 1994, at an intergovernmental conference convened by UNESCO in Paris, the status of teachers was recognized in cooperation with the International Labour Organization (ILO).

Post the adoption the recommendation of UNESCO/ILO October 5th was declared to be World Teachers’ Day.

The theme for World Teachers’ Day 2022 is “The transformation of education begins with teachers”.

It is a day to celebrate the transformative and critical role that teachers play in growing learners’ potential.

Kazo: District Council approves supplementary budget

The Kazo district council has approved a supplementary budget of UGX 175,044,348 for the financial year 2022/2023.

During council sitting at the district council hall on Tuesday, the speaker, Hon. Daniel Nahurira Bwamunyoga noted that the need for the supplementary budget arose after the approval of the budget for the current financial year early in May, 2022.

Bwamunyoga told the council that the approved UGX 21.5b will be allocated towards the completion of various stalled projects in the district.

The Resident District commissioner (RDC), Al-Hajji Umar Mawiya Lule asked the council to have close monitoring of the projects approved by the council to ensure that there is value for money.

Mawiya also called upon the elected leaders and the technical team to work together for the success of the projects and Kazo district as a whole.

26 year old man hacks father to death, reports self to police

Police in Buhweju district are investigating circumstances under which a 26 year old man hacked his father to death on Tuesday.

Martial Tumusiime, the greater Bushenyi region police spokesperson confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Alex Ndyahwerwa, 55, and suspect as Urban Tukamuhebwa, all residents of Karungu-Buhweju district.

Tumusiime revealed that the suspect demanded for banana for brewing from the deceased, a request which the deceased denied to grant which resulted into a quarrel.

It is said that they both had pangas and in the process the deceased first attacked the suspect and cut him on the mouth and in turn the suspect is said to have cut his father on the head and died on spot after which he rushed to police and reported himself for fear of the mob.

The deceased’s body was removed and taken to Nsiika Health Center IV and postmortem report indicated that the cause of death was over bleeding.

Kazo: Man drowns in a dam

Residents of Kigando cell in Rwemengo Parish, Kanoni sub-county, Kazo district are mourning the death of a man in his 30s whose body was found floating in a dam.

The deceased has been identified as Tumwesigye Abel, a resident of Rwemengo in Rwemengo parish who went missing 4 days ago after leaving home for burial in the same village.

According to an eyewitness, Kwikiriza Martin, a casual labourer in the Kigando cell said that he realized the body was in the water when he was going to give water to the cows and notified the manager of the farm, to call the police.

Kyokunda Gaudia, the mother to the deceased said that her son went missing 4days ago after telling her that he was going for a burial only to be informed that his dead body was found floating on the water.

Mutungi Patrick, the chairman of LC I Kigando cell in Rwemengo confirmed the incident and intimated to our reporter that he had received the bad news at around 10am as the residents asked him to join them to retrieve the body from the water.

Magyezi Henry, the vice chairman Kanoni sub-county and also councilor Rwemengo parish and Hon Peter Kabandize councilor representing Mbogo parish, attributed the incident to drinking too much alcohol.

Police from Kazo police station led by the OC CID transferred the body to Kazo Health Centre IV for postmortem as investigations continue.

One arrested for defiling 7 year old biological daughter

Police in Bushenyi is holding a 37 year old man on charges of defiling his own biological daughter.

Dominic Musiime 37, a resident of Swazi II, Swazi parish, Kyamuhunga Sub-county was arrested on orders of Adolf Kanyomozi, the sub-county chairperson following reports from teachers and nurses at St Mary’s primary school where the 7 year old victim has been schooling in Middle class.

Laban Butamanya, the parish chairperson for Swazi II, said the victim, told her colleagues at school how she has on several occasions been sexually assaulted by her biological father which prompted the other pupils to tip off school authorities.  

Imelda Tumusiime, the lady councilor LC V representing Kyamuhunga condemned the act saying such cases have been rampant in their area. 

Adolf Kanyomozi, the LC III chairperson Kyamuhunga sub-county attributed growing cases of defilement, rape and high rate of crimes in his jurisdiction to domestic violence in families.

Kanyomozi said that the victim stayed with her father alone when her parents separated 5 years ago due to domestic violence.

Martial Tumusiime, the greater Bushenyi police spokesperson confirmed the arrest saying investigations into the matter continue.

Coffee farmers form cooperative to boost production, marketing

Coffee farmers in Ibanda district have formed a cooperative society that seeks to find ways to increase production and quality along the value chain.

Speaking during the launch of Ibanda Coffee Growers’ Cooperative Union at the district head offices on Wednesday, Herbert Happy Mayanja, the LC V chairman Ibanda district said the cooperative will help farmers to find better markets by removing middlemen who have been cheating farmers.

Mayanja added that middlemen have been taking advantage of desperate farmers and paying them peanuts for their coffee, which the cooperative will fight using its strong bargaining power.

He said the group also targets to export its coffee in the future to ensure farmers gain maximally from their investment in the crop.

According to Alison Mwesigye, the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) coordinator for Ibanda and Kitagwenda districts, 600 tonnes of coffee from Ibanda district are exported by different individual traders.

The district targets to increase production from almost one and a half kilogrammes of clean coffee per tree annually to five kilos within five years.

Silver Nkwasibwe, the Ibanda district senior agriculture officer, explained the average production per coffee tree is currently at 1.4 kilogrammes, saying that it was very low.

Additionally, interim district and sub-county executive committees have been formed to spearhead the project as well as mobilize and register farmers.

The district committee of 11 members is chaired by Joseph Bankunda, from Rukiri sub-county in Ibanda South County.

Kazo: Kidnapped baby reunited with mother

The baby that was on Sunday 18th September 2022 stolen from Kyenshebashebe village, Ntambazi parish, Kazo sub-county, Kazo district has today been reunited with the mother.

The baby has been brought by personnel from Sanyu Babies’ Home in Wakaliga Kampala where police in Kampala had put it, after arresting Fatuma Namulondo from Wakaliga, Nateete Kampala and Twinamatsiko Hope from Kyenshebashebe, the suspects in this kidnapping.

During the handover of the baby, Kondy Bransio, a senior social worker at Sanyu Babies’ Home informed the baby’s mother that the police of Kazo invested a lot of efforts to seeing that the child was recovered, and asked the mother of the baby to take good care of her child.

Bransio appreciated the police of Kazo for the effort they invested in searching for the baby and the cooperation they had with Sanyu Babies’ Home to take care of the baby.

Ninsiima Jovitah, the mother to the baby appreciated the police of Kazo and Kampala in coordination with Sanyu Babies’ home for keeping her child alive.

Andinda Andrew, a police officer at Kazo police station confirmed that the suspects in this kidnapping are already in police custody adding that they will be taken to court to face their charges.

The Sanyu Babies’ Home personnel transported the baby and mother directly to her home in Kyenshebashebe where they have found the relatives waiting to receive the baby.

Kiruhura: Chairman LC V promises reopening of Kashongi market

The LCV chairman Kiruhura district, Dan Mukago has promised the residents of Kashongi that Kashongi Market will be reopened as soon as possible.

In the meeting with the residents of Kashongi in Kashongi Sub-county on Tuesday, Mukago stated that the now open Kyenshama market in Kabushwere parish, Kashongi will remain working but also the inactive Kashongi market will be reopened to benefit residents and the district at large.

The assurance follows complaints from residents who said that this market was ignored by the district authorizes after the creation of Kyenshama market.

While giving the status report, Mukago revealed that the district administration is going to organize how the market should restart through mobilization of communities especially the business community and traders, identifying and opening the market land boundaries and fencing it accordingly and allowing market vendors to start a daily roadside market and allocate stalls to the community to pave way for the start.

Mukago said the district is ready to support the re-establishment of the market with hopes of collecting a lot of revenue from this market during its operation.

God Arinaitwe, one of the residents said they eagerly want the reoperation of this market to support the population in earning household income.

Joy Katafire, a dairy farmer, also resident noted that for a long time, Kashongi market has been helping different people to get where to sell and buy commodities as well as looking for means of survival.

Kazo: Diabetes and Hypertension Association launched

People living with diabetes and hypertension in Kazo district have today launched their association dubbed Kazo district diabetes and hypertension Association with an objective to help them improve their quality of life.

Speaking during the launch held at Kazo health center IV on Tuesday, Julius Muhumuza, the association chairperson explained that they started the association to have one voice and raise it to get help from the government especially in acquiring medication.

Muhumuza noted saying that these two conditions have complications and their intention is to create awareness about it, provide training and sensitization to instill discipline and hope among the patients and improve on the care.

Al-Hajji Mawiya Lule, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Kazo district appreciated the members for joining the association and also pledged to carry out on-and-off ground monitoring to ensure that their medication and other services are available when needed.

Bushenyi: Court grants bail to doctor accused of defiling his own daughter

Chief Magistrate Court in Bushenyi has this Tuesday granted bail to a 48 year old man who has been on remand for about 3 months over defiling his own daughter.

The director of public prosecution, Jane Frances Abodo has withdrawn the charges of aggravated defilement against the suspect identified as Gilverse Atwine, a medical doctor at St Francis Mutolere hospital in Kisoro district and preferred charges of incest. 

Atwiine, a born of Isingiro whose family stays in kyamuhunga, Butare town council is said to have defiled and impregnated his 17 year old biological daughter, a S.3 student at Bweranyangi girls’ secondary school which he denied.

Atwine has been on remand at Nyamushekyera government prison since June this year when he appeared before Chief Magistrate Simon Toloko for the mention of the case but was remanded on grounds that the court had no jurisdiction to try such cases that are only triable by the high court.

Through his lawyer of Kasenene and company advocates, the suspect petitioned to DPP and the decision comes in favor of the suspect after charges of aggravated defilement were dropped and charges of incest preferred.

DPP informed the public that withdrawing the case from defilement doesn’t mean that the suspect is free against the charges.

Faith Betenga Amanya, the Bushenyi district probation officer said that as probation officer she has no objection to court’s decision but court should bear in mind that the victim needs psychological support.

Additionally, chief Magistrate Toloko granted the applicant of UGX 2 million cash bail and a non cash bail of UGX 5 million to each of the sureties.
