Five market vendors perish in Mubende road crash.

Four people died on spot and at least 40 other people sustained injuries in an accident that happened at around 10pm on Wednesday night at Kanseera Village along the Mubende -Kakumiro Road that involved a white Fuso truck REG No. UAY 196 T.

Racheal Kawala, the police Spokesperson for Wamala Region confirmed the incident saying the ill-fated Fuso truck which was transporting members of Bivamuntuyo market traders group from Butoloogo market to Mubende Town, veered off the road and rammed into a nearby building, killing four occupants on spot.

“The truck was overloaded with market vendors and their luggage, the driver lost control and it overturned killing 4 people and injuring 18,” said Kawala adding the 3 died on spot while another died at Mubende hospital. The other victim has been confirmed dead today morning.

The truck driver only identified as Mukisa is said to have been under the influence of alcohol, he reportedly lost control of the truck and rammed into the building. He’s currently on the run after he escaped with minor injuries.

Kawala says the victims were rushed to Mubende hospital for medical attention and bodies of the deceased taken to Mubende hospital mortuary pending postmortem.

Richard Opio, the Mubende Regional Referral Hospital administrator said six of the injured victims were transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital for further medical attention.

He identified the deceased as one Nakibuka, a female adult, Katushabe Jasinta, (45), Harriet, a female adult and a one Ssembatya, a male adult.

“We are still waiting for relatives to provide us with details about the other deceased people,” he said.

The injured are among others; Mubulizi kelebu, Ssemakula Alice, Kasibante Emmanuel, Wasswa kenneth, Zziwa Ronald, Ssenegeya poisiano, Jonathan, Maale Richard, Bale Francis, Kasumba Vincent, Kalijira Nakyanzi, Safina, Nampijja Grace, Nfitikiza Habibu, Steven Nzeimana, Lukwago Willy, Nangozi Realty and Musanagowoza Supecioza.

The former Eagles production band member believes the brand she has overtime built in the music industry has enabled her to become popular and calls upon people to support her just like they did Bobi Wine.

“If people could trust Bobi Wine for the presidency, why shouldn’t they trust me for EALA. Unless someone has a bad heart, I don’t see any reason why they shouldn’t support me,” she recently said during an interview with a local blogger.

Kusasira who listed her intentions in 2021 said she has all it takes to be in that parliament and she does so because she is also a champion of regional integration.

“We are thinking of regional development to increase our diplomatic ties. I’m very serious on it and more serious,” she said.

Kusasira who is a presidential advisor added that she won’t go to EALA for selfish gains but to help Ugandans as it’s on record that she has been supporting the poor, giving an example of how she gave out welding machines to Salaama road residents.

In case she succeeds, she will join other artistes who have made it to the political arena such as Bobi Wine, Dr Hildermann, Geoffrey Lutaaya, among others.

Mulago Hospital spends UGX 21m on separation of conjoined twins.

A group of about 25 specialists at Mulago National Specialised Hospital led by Dr John Sekabira; a senior consultant paediatric surgeon, have successfully separated another pair of conjoined twins.

The twins were born in December 2021 to Moses Talemwa, 26, and Hellen Kugonza, 25, both residents of Bulinda Village in Hoima District. The twins who were co-joined at the chest, abdomen and also shared a liver were referred to Mulago hospital by Hoima Regional Referral Hospital and on December 13, 2021 they were received by the Mulago Hospital team when they were only two days old.

Dr Sekabira told journalists that after receiving them, he and the team did a cross examination and found that they were joined in the chest and abdomen and were sharing vital organs like the liver. “We worked hard and made sure that they were out of danger,” he told journalists.

Before the surgery, the twins were put on a specialized diet to gain weight that would withstand the procedure.
“They were fed on special milk and by the time they were two months, their combined weight was 8kgs which was very commendable,” he said.

Dr Sekabira revealed that the surgery took about five hours after which they were then taken to the intensive care unit where they stayed for two days before being taken back to the ward adding that the babies have since stabilized and are feeding well.

Dr Rosemary Byanyima; the deputy Executive Director of Mulago hospital, said they have trained people in different specialities, including paediatric surgeons, to handle such cases of offering specialised surgeries and care.

“We have over time carried out separation of such twins. This kind of care has been possible because through the renovation, re-equipping and remodeling of the hospital sponsored by the government of Uganda. The theatre and intensive care are well equipped and even the wards have been remodeled to take care for such cases,” she said.

Dr Byanyima, however, called for more financial support from government to enable specialized and timely services adding that in the just-concluded surgery the hospital had to spend up to about 21 million Shillings.

Putin’s thirst for more blood leaves at least 10 dead in Kharkiv.

Rocket strikes in Kharkiv; Ukraine’s second largest city have killed at least 10 people and wounded 35 after a Russian armoured column descended on Kharkiv firing rocket barrages, the Ukrainian Interior Ministry adviser Anton Herashchenko said. An opera house, concert hall and government offices were hit in Freedom Square, in the centre of the north-eastern city Kharkiv.

Upon invasion into Ukraine’s capital Kyiv the previous day, similar strikes killed and wounded dozens in the city.

Volodymyr Zelenskiy; the Ukrainian President said the artillery barrages on Kharkiv amount to state terrorism. “The rubble is being cleared and there will be even more victims and wounded,” he said.

Nearly a week since Russian troops poured over the border, they have failed to capture a single major Ukrainian city after running into fierce resistance. The civilian deaths of the last 48 hours are an unfavourable sign that frustrated Russian commanders could be resorting to more devastating tactics.

Pictures released by U.S. satellite company Maxar showed Russian tanks, artillery and fuel trucks stretching for 40 miles (60 km) along a highway to the north which affirms that Russia still has more forces to throw into the fight.

Meanwhile, in Moscow, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu says the Kremlin will place its military operation in Ukraine until it achieves its goals. This is aimed at protecting the city from threats created by the West and is currently not occupying Ukraine’s territory.

Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov told a Geneva disarmament meeting via video link on Tuesday that Ukraine had been seeking nuclear weapons. Dozens of diplomats walked out as he began his speech.

Mulago Hospital Executive Director arrested

Dr. Byarugaba Baterana, the Executive Director Mulago National Referral Hospital was today arrested by the State House Health Monitoring Unit (HMU).

Upon arrest, Dr Byarugaba was driven to the HMU offices in Nakasero in Kampala to record statements on various concerns about the hospital management.

Dr. Warren Namara, the director of the HMU, confirmed Baterana’s arrest saying the hospital has been under their radar for the last couple of months.
“We assisted him to come to our office in order to help us with investigations of Mulago National Referral Hospital since he is the accounting officer,” said Namara.

He said that during their investigations, they had got queries on a number of things.

“We got queries on plant, machinery, financial and human resources, general management, among others. So we are asking him [Baterana] to assist us in understanding a few of those things,” added Namara.

UPDF Captain shoots himself dead.

The Police are investigating circumstances under which Lira City Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) coordinator shot himself dead.

The deceased identified as Captain Binaisa Olaka was found lying in a pool of blood in his room at around 2:30pm on Monday afternoon in Otolemom-Oleo cell, Central ward Dokolo Town council, Dokolo District. The reasons for his actions are still unknown.

According to family sources, Olaka could have developed anger from his work place which triggered his action. “We only heard a gunshot and called police who broke his door and found him dead,” the source that preferred anonymity said.

Hanington Busheija; the District Police Commander confirmed the incident adding that police from Dokolo central police station visited the scene and commenced investigations to ascertain circumstances under which the army officer ended his life.

Busheija says the body of the deceased has been taken to Dokolo HCIV Mortuary for postmortem. Late Olaka survived by 17 Children and one wife.

Deputy Speaker hands UGX 15 million to MPs Ssegirinya, Ssewanyana’s families.

Following a closed-door meeting with the Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among in her office, has extended financial support to the wives of incarcerated Members of Parliament, Muhammad Ssegirinya and Allan Ssewanyana. Among handed UGX 5 million to MP Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana’s wives, Ssegirinya’s mother bringing the total UGX15 million.

Hon Ssewanyana, (NUP, Makindye Division West MP) and Hon Ssegirinya (NUP, Kawempe Division North) have since September 2021 been on remand over charges of murder, terrorism and aiding terrorism during last year’s machete attacks in Masaka where close to 30 lives were lost.

On Tuesday, 22 February 2022, Justine Nakajumba, Ssegirinya’s mother, and Twahilah Akandinda, Ssegirinya’s wife were granted access to Parliament, where they met with the Director of Communication and Public Affairs, Chris Obore, pleading for his release.

On Friday, 25 February 2022, they were joined by Hon Ssewanyana’s wife, Lydia Namata, for another meeting where they reported to Parliament that they are struggling to look after their families in absence of their key providers.

The two petitioned the Deputy Speaker over the delayed trial of their husbands by the court.

Hon Ssewanyana’s wife disclosed that because of the ongoing case against her husband, her children have been stigmatized by others who keep referring to their father and his colleague as criminals.

They were accompanied by legislators; Hon Peter Mugema the MP Iganga Municipality and Hon David Kabanda the MP Kasambya County. The MPs revealed that their colleague’s children are stuck at home because they are unable to pay school tuition.

The Deputy Speaker through her Executive Secretary, Herbert Ariko, handed over a token of UGX 5 million to the threesome to assist with upkeep.

Among revealed that as parliament, they sympathize with the families and understand what they are going through in the absence of the MPs and promised to give them all the support they need as we push for a speedy trial.

The development comes at the backdrop of government deferring committal of Ssegirinya and Ssewanyana to the High Court for trial to March 10, 2022.

Biden, Putin to hold summit, Russia begins invasion.

The White House revealed that US President Joe Biden agreed in principle to hold a summit with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the crisis over Ukraine. The summit proposed by France talks will only take place if Russia does not invade its neighbor.

The proposed summit was announced by the French presidency after two three-hour long phone calls between President Emmanuel Macron and Putin.

The second exchange happened in the early hours of Monday Moscow time, and followed a 15-minute conversation Macron had with Biden.

President Macron’s office said details of the possible summit would be discussed during a meeting between US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Thursday.

In a statement that confirmed the proposal, the White House also said Russia appeared to be “continuing preparations for a full-scale assault on Ukraine very soon”, and that the US was ready to impose “swift and severe consequences” should it happen.

A US company Maxar also revealed that new satellite imagery showed multiple deployments of armoured equipment and more than 150,000 troops from Russian garrisons near the border with Ukraine, indicating increased military readiness.

Police arrest man for killing two children.

Police in Nakaseke District have arrested a man for allegedly killing two children inside their grandmother’s house at Kyangato Village, Nakaseke District on Monday night.

It is reported that the suspect, sneaked into Norah Mbekete’s house and accessed the bedroom where three children were sleeping in the same bed before slitting the throats of Daniella Najjuma,8, and Diana Namakula,5.

According to relatives, the suspect first went to their grandmother’s bedroom and snatched a phone that he used as a source of light to access the other room where the children were sleeping and cut their throats.

David Kayondo, the Kyangato LC I chairperson, said the suspect had threatened to harm the two children and their mother who is now married to another man.

“He then rushed outside the house and dumped the panga before disappearing from the scene. When information spread that the two children had been killed, he was the first suspect since the surviving child had noticed someone with the same physique as the man who has always threatened to harm the members of the family. We quickly located him from one of the bars. His response was very suspicious when the police intervened. He later confessed to the murder before the police and LC officials,” David Kayondo said in an interview.

Isah Ssemogerere, the Savana Region Police spokesperson, confirmed the arrest of the prime suspect and recovered a panga and blood stained clothes hidden inside the house.

“The suspect is helping the police with further investigation after admitting that he is behind the unfortunate incident,” said Ssemogerere.

According to police, the suspect is believed to be the biological father of the deceased children although relatives and the area LC officials claim that he had denied any relations.

Nowelina Nagadya, the mother of the deceased children, who was at Semuto Village at the time of the incident, said when she separated with the suspect three years ago, she decided to let the children stay with their grandmother.

“The man kept claiming that two of the children were not his and would harm them one day,” she claimed.
