Police in Sheema District are investigating circumstances under which community members refused to bury the body of a 67-year-old woman and maliciously destroyed family properties.

Martial Tumusiime, the greater Bushenyi region police spokesperson said on Friday at around 7Pm, Arthur Rumanzi transported back home the dead body of his aunt, Doreka Kandebeho who died from Kabwohe health Centre IV where she had been admitted since 8th May 2023.

Man sentenced for burning mother’s clothes, shoes over land

Ibanda Grade One magistrate’s court has sentenced a 22-year-old man to community service orders for burning his mother’s clothes, shoes and mat.

Alex Mucunguzi, a resident of Kanyansheko in Kagongo Division, Ibanda Municipality, will serve five days of community service.

State prosecutor, Tian Emmanuel told court that in February, Mucunguzi burnt his mother’s clothes, shoes and a mat, valued at UGX 600,000. The convict’s mother was in the garden at the time of the crime. However, she reported him to Police and he was arrested and charged accordingly.

While appearing before the court on Tuesday, Mucunguzi pleaded guilty to the offence saying he got angry after learning that the family banana plantation had been sold off on his return home from his workplace in Masaka.

Court presided over by Esther Murungi ordered Mucunguzi, to pay his mother, Annet Tumuhairwe, UGX 800,000 within 30 days of completing the community service as compensation for the property lost and expenses.

Court also handed the convict who has been on remand at Nyabuhikye Prison for over three months, a two-year suspended sentence in case he defaults on the sentence and compensation order.

The magistrate explained that the convict got a lenient sentence because he publicly apologized to his mother before court and promised to compensate her.

Tumuhairwe, the convict’s mother told court that she forgave her son, but wants Mucunguzi to leave her home and live elsewhere, arguing that he is old enough to fend for himself.

Farmers urged to embrace modern technology to improve production

Farmers have been encouraged to work in groups and cooperatives if they are to improve output, access sustainable markets for their produce and affordable inputs for their agricultural activities.

Speaking during the farmers’ training and exhibition at Saza Playground, Justus Ahimbisibwe, the Ibanda Community Organization Network (ICON), said the government and non-profit organizations in the agriculture sector are always willing to support organized farmers in different ways, including provision of improved seeds and animal breeds, equipment and training.

The three-day event which attracted farmers, input suppliers, innovators, and educational institutions was organized by ICON, Ibanda District Farmers’ Association (IBADIFA) and Ibanda district local government and aimed at creating market linkages among farmers and buyers.

Dr Ferdinand Bitanihirwe, the IBADIFA chairperson asked farmers to adopt appropriate technologies to improve production, increase output, become competitive and access good markets.

Sylvia Naturinda, the event organizing committee chairperson and ICON CEO, added that harnessing technology in production and value addition would enable the farmers to access better markets.

Speaking during the same function, Asaph Nabimanya, from Apinet Uganda, asked Beekeepers to embrace modern hives and practices, like feeding the bees well on supplementary feeds to improve production.

Nabimanya noted that poor husbandry practices like bees traveling long distances in search of food and water and the use of traditional hives are largely to blame for the minimal levels of productivity in the sector.

Maurice Mutabazi, the Ibanda district entomologist revealed Ibanda district has about 800 beekeepers, producing an estimated 2,000 kgs of honey annually.

Patience Akampa Katungye, from Bin Dairy, a women’s group involved making yoghurt and other milk products, appreciated the organizers of the exhibition saying they have been able to market collectively, easing market access.
