Farmers asked to add value to their agricultural products

Residents of Buhweju district have been asked to embrace value addition of their agricultural products to compete for both the East African and the global market.

The call was made by Eng Dr John Bosco Koy Kariisa from office of the president of Uganda while speaking as the guest of honor at the fundraising towards the construction of a classroom block at Rushambya Primary School in Burere sub-county, Buhweju district. 

Kariisa appreciated the area residents for their efforts towards commercial farming by extensively growing tea and coffee, noting that getting reliable market for them can lead to development and economic transformation.

Kariisa also added that education is a sure way to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor and called on the residents to embrace it.  

Amon Murebi, the chief organizer asked leaders and residents to always be supportive of the schools within their localities as the only way that can bring development within the area.

Kazo: Farmers decry water shortage

A section of farmers under Mbaba farmer’s society limited in Mbaba Parish, Kazo sub-county, Kazo district have appealed to the government to prioritize the construction of dams to address water shortage in an area.

The farmers, led by model farmer Mr. Stanley Mwesigye, said their effort to continue with SNV’s mission of improving milk production and compete with other areas in terms of dairy production is constantly frustrated by drought.

Mwesigye made the revelation during the SNV field day outreach training with a team from Kazo district local government including political leaders, technical staff and production department team at Mwesigye Stanley’s farm in Mbaba parish, Kazo sub-county, Kazo district on Thursday designed to strengthen the SNV collaboration with the district and to introduce new technologies for uptake and share useful market information for the matter.

Aikiriza Steven, the dairy advisor for The Inclusive Diary Enterprise (TIDE) project under SNV Netherlands Development Organization revealed that from 2016 until December 2023, their aim was to improve dairy farming by addressing animal famine, noting that they already achieved ahead of the closure of their services in southwestern Uganda.

In response to water shortage scourge, Johnbaptist Asiimwe, the district production officer Kazo revealed that as the district they are working hand in hand with the Ministry of Water and Environment to give the farmers tractors for constructing dams.

Hon Fred Ntungire, district councilor representing Kanoni sub-county who represented the Kazo district chairperson Rev Samuel Mugisha Katugunda urged all farmers to take an example and embrace commercial farming in order to improve and increase production.

Mothers asked to practice exclusive breastfeeding

Mothers have been urged to breastfeed their babies exclusively for the first 180 days as one way of reducing the rate of stunted growth amongst young children. 

Speaking to journalists, Jean Kobucunguzi, the nutrition focal person at Bushenyi health center IV noted that many mothers ignore breastfeeding claiming that they are busy forgetting that breast milk is the only source of all nutrients for the babies.

Kobucunguzi said that for the baby to breastfeed effectively, the mother should breastfeed her child 12 times a day in the first 6 months.

Kobucunguzi asked the pregnant women to always go for antenatal checkups at least 4 times saying this will help them to produce healthy babies and be helped by health workers to breastfeed their new born babies in the first 5 minutes.

Uganda joined the rest of the world to mark breastfeeding week that is commemorated every first week of August annually and this year 2023, the World Breastfeeding Week is being celebrated under the theme; “Let’s make breastfeeding and work, work!”

The theme emphasizes necessary actions by policymakers, employers and colleagues to support continued exclusive breastfeeding in working women to their infants.

Kiruhura: Students urged to use their surroundings to solve societal problems

Students have been encouraged to find solutions to society problems within their environments.

The remarks were made by Professor Ogwang Patrick, the maker of Covidex during the first Science Education and Innovation Fair 2023 for all secondary schools in Kiruhura.

The event which was held at Kaaro high school playground Grounds, in Nshwere, Rushere town council, Kiruhura district was organized by the Nyabushozi constituency Member of Parliament, Hon Wilson Kajwegye under the Kajwegye Foundation.

While officially launching this new system of science expos for the schools in Nyabushozi, Hon Wilson Kajwegye said; “This system designed in line with the future we envision for Uganda as we all need to acknowledge Uganda’s abilities in science, technology, and innovation.”

Hon Kajwegye noted that such an event is important as it brings together various players within the value chain to pave a way forward for Uganda’s science, technology, and innovation sector.

“Science and Technology hold the key to the present and future development of Uganda and as a government, we are aware that to escape from poverty, investment in science and technology education is the key,” said Kajwengye.

Professor Ogwang who was guest speaker urged students in schools to go out of the classrooms and use the environment to discover new things that are helpful to the society.

Kashaija Patrick, the head teacher of Kaaro high school, revealed that he is hopeful that the exhibition will help their students to be inspired in taking science subjects.

During this exhibition, Lake Mburo Secondary School topped all schools participating in showcasing their practicality in science and technology.

Mitooma: Couple arrested over daugther’s death

Police in Mitooma District have arrested a 33-year-old man and his wife over assaulting their daughter to death.

Martial Tumusiime, the greater Bushenyi region police spokesperson confirmed the incident and identified the suspects as Herbert Twinamatsiko,33, a boda boda rider and his wife Phiona Natukunda, 30, all residents of Kyanzire village who assaulted their daughter only identified as Whitney.

He added that the incident happened on 27th July at 6pm in Karehe II, Kyanzire Parish, Kashenshero town council.

It is alleged that Twinamatsiko had produced the deceased outside of wedlock and was brought home to stay with the stepmother who had been torturing her for a while.

Unfortunately, on 27th July the two seriously tortured the deceased to death and hid the body in one of the rooms and went away but returned at night and transported it to Rwenshama B in Kanyabwanga Sub-County for burial.

Police said they were tipped off on Friday by a Good Samaritan and they arrested the two parents as prime suspects.

The body of the deceased was found with fresh physical injuries seemingly from serious beating using sticks.

55 year old man remanded over attempting to kill wife

Court in Ibanda has remanded a 55-year-old man to Nyabuhikye government Prison on charges of attempting to kill his wife Grace Kamakondere last month.

The convict identified as Levinary Kabatungye, a resident of Ryensinga,-Nyarukika in Rukiri sub-county was dragged to court by his wife to answer for the crimes.

While appearing before the Ibanda Grade One magistrate’s court, Kabatungye was read the charge of attempted murder for attacking and trying to kill his wife Kakondere with a machete on June 19th 2023.

The victim escaped with deep injuries on her arms which prompted the suspect to run away from the village. Upon his return on Sunday July 23rd, Kabatungye was arrested by Police and he faces charges of attempted murder.

Grade One magistrate Esther Murungi advised the suspect not to take any plea, explaining that her court had no power to hear his case.

If he is found guilty, Kabatungye faces life imprisonment as the maximum jail term for the offence. 

He was remanded to prison until August 16, when he is expected to return to court to take plea before the trial magistrate.

Mbarara: 26 year old man wanted for wife’s murder

Police in Mbarara City are hunting for a 26 year-old man only identified as Saidi, over the alleged murder of his 22 year-old wife.

Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police Spokesperson, said that Saidi, a resident of Katete central Cell, Katete ward in Mbarara City south division is suspected to have killed his wife identified as Phiona Ninsiima.

Kasasira revealed that Saidi, the husband of the deceased developed a misunderstanding with his lover Ninsiima, he stabbed her in the right side of the stomach before leaving her body in a pool of blood in their rented single room in Katete cell, Katete ward, Mbarara City south division.

Kasasira further revealed that Saidi was accusing the deceased of having extramarital affairs.

By press time, the body of the deceased was conveyed to Mbarara regional referral hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination and efforts to apprehend the prime suspect are underway.

Mbarara: Police Officer arrested over shooting civilian to death

Police in Mbarara district have arrested one of their own over shooting a 45-year-old man to death while attempting to arrest him.

Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police Spokespersons said N56098 CPL Benson Agaba and N63315PC Boaz Tumuhimbise attached to Rubindi Police station in Mbarara district, had gone to arrest Gerald Tibigarukwamu, following a number of threatening violence complaints against him (Tibigarukwamu) by a one Godwin Tumwine.

Kasasira added that preliminary findings indicate that one of the officers, N56098 CPL Benson Agaba was prompted to discharge a bullet in the air when the suspect reportedly threatened to cut him with a panga.

He noted that the action did not yield expected results and the deceased advanced closer with determination to harm the officer.

This prompted the officer to further discharge the bullet that hit the suspect on the head killing him instantly. Kasasira identified the deceased as Gerald Tibigarukwamu, 45, a resident of Akatooma cell, Kagongi Parish, Kagongi sub-county in Mbarara district.

Mbarara High School hailed for championing vocational training

The first lady and the minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni has hailed Mbarara High School for supporting vocational training for economic transformation.

In her speech read by Thomas Tayebwa, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament at the commissioning of Addis Ababa Dormitory at Mbarara High School yesterday, the first lady further revealed that the ministry of Education and Sports is committed to working closely with stakeholders at the school to re-roof over thirty old structures with asbestos roof which pose a health risk to learners.

Janet Museveni hailed Mbarara high school for doing well in the implementation of the new lower secondary curriculum through teaching vocational subjects like metal work, wood work, agriculture, technical drawing among others.

Janet Museveni appreciated the old students for complimenting government efforts in reviving the infrastructure at the school.

The Chairperson of the Board of Governors, Prof. William Bazeyo, appreciated the First Lady for championing the new lower secondary curriculum noting that her exemplary leadership in Uganda’s education system has resulted into an increase in the number of graduates.

In his remarks, the Ankole diocese Bishop, Sheldon Mwesigwa hailed old boys of Mbarara High School for being supportive towards the school.

In his speech, the chairman of the old students’ Association, Dr Medard Bitekyerezo, requested the minister to utilize her connections, including her husband, President Yoweri Museveni, to support the school with implementation of projects that are still in the pipeline.

In 2016 fire gutted Addis Ababa and in 2017 old boys started raising funds to construct the new state of the art hostel worth UGX 2 billion and will accommodate up to 300 students.

Police probe death of 24 year old nurse

Police in Rukiga are investigating circumstances under which a 24 year old nurse was found in her house in Kagunga cell, Pirate Parish in Muhanga Town council, Rukiga District.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region police spokesperson confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Naturinda Christine, 24, a nurse attached to Karorwa HCII, and a resident of Kagunga cell , in Muhanga Town council in Rukiga District.

It’s said that on 18/07/2023 at around 09:00pm, the deceased entered her one roomed house and just pushed the door back but she did not rock it and slept.

Maate told journalists that on 19/07/2023 at around 11:00am a female neighbor got concerned and tried to call her but she didn’t respond.

Maate added that at around 12:00pm, Rubarema Dezideria, 48, a teacher by profession also a neighbor to the deceased also tried to call her but she did not respond. Consequently he pushed the door which was not locked and entered the room.

Upon entering the room, he found her lifeless body in her room and they called the Office in charge at Bukinda police post for further management and Homicide team were dispatched to document the scene.

After police reached at the scene two bottles one of Rwenzori and another one for mountain dew soda were recovered in the room with smelly substances, they have been submitted to the region for onward submission to Government Analytical Laboratory for analysis and the body conveyed to Kabele referral Hospital for autopsy (postmortem).

Police said that the report will be used to establish the actual cause of death.

According to Police, preliminary investigations suggest that the deceased might have taken poison thus committing suicide because the body had no external injuries and by press time no one had been arrested for inquiries.
