Bushenyi Teachers Sacco gifts its members Christmas goodies

Teachers under greater Bushenyi Sacco have embarked on a school to school mobilization program to strengthen the membership and recruitment of more members.

Speaking during the awarding ceremony of members who participated in the Christmas promotion, Abias Tumusiime, the general manager Greater Bushenyi Teachers Sacco noted that the promotion started in October as part of cooperate social responsibility and members were required to buy at least three shares in order to enter into a draw.

Kafaku kodoni, the board chairman noted that in greater Bushenyi, there are over 6000 teachers on government payroll, yet only 2000 are members of the Sacco.

Kafaku said that some teachers don’t know that this Sacco exists and they are exposed to commercial banks which are charging them high interest rates.

John Njoki, the secretary to the board revealed that this Sacco was looked at as if it is for only primary school teachers simply because the founders are only primary teachers and this affected its development.

Njoki added that during the mobilization, they come up with unique products to attract more teachers to join their Sacco.

All participants of the Christmas promotion won themselves prizes including goats, hens, and sodas among others.

Sulait Kitaka, the Kiruhura District Police commander promised that he will immediately solve the problem by tightening security in the area.

Kitaka tasked LC I chairpersons to always handle cases pertaining domestic violence.

Manya Allan, the LCIII Chairperson Kikatsi Sub-county revealed that three cases of murder have already been reported; alleging that strangers without identification may be behind the murder.

Kenneth Rindirira, the district councilor representing Kikatsi sub-county advised that head counting should be carried in every cell to know the number of people living in the sub-county noting that some LC I chairpersons do not know the number of residents in their cells which he says is a big problem security-wise.

Bushenyi: Increased murder cases attributed to domestic violence

Mishael Teriyeitu, the regional child family protection unit greater Bushenyi said there is a lot of land conflicts because several heads of the family die without making clear wills.

He said that some of the cases are caused by extra-marital relationships where some men have failed to satisfy all the parties and this has forced women to connive with their children to kill family heads.

Teriyeitu further attributes the killing of young girls to men having sex with more than one person and some girls invading marriages with intentions of ruining people’s marriages.

SAGE beneficiaries urged to form groups ahead of new gov’t program

Elderly persons in Ibanda have been advised to form groups through which they will receive government grants to set up income-generating projects.

Norbert Kamugisha, the district senior community development officer, asked the elderly to form groups of between 5-15 people to benefit from the small grants of UGX 5m per group aimed at ensuring they have sustainable sources of income.

Kamugisha revealed that persons with disabilities (PWDs) in the district were already benefitting from a similar government grant.

Kamugisha made the recommendation while addressing older persons from Bufunda Division, Ibanda Municipality who had turned up to receive their Social Assistance Grant Empowerment (SAGE) money at the division offices on Friday.

The UGX 75,000 per person is for the first quarter of this fiscal year. The beneficiaries are entitled to UGX 25,000 per month each under SAGE programme.

Commenting on the new programme, David Bigira, district male councilor representing older persons, said they were already sensitizing older persons about the government initiative. He added that they will start with those willing and later bring over 400 SAGE beneficiaries in the district on board.

One of the SAGE beneficiaries keeps his cash as he leaves the disbursement area.

Kamugisha expressed disappointment over those stealing the money from the beneficiaries. He cited a case in Kashangura Kagongo Division, where the son of the beneficiary has been taking his father’s cash but never handing it over to the old man since he accessed the SAGE payroll.

The official said he was working with the Police in Ibanda to arrest this person so he answers for his crime.

On the issue of names missing on payroll, he assured qualifying older persons that the anomaly would be addressed and they get paid.

Eighty-three year-old Emmanuel Begumana, of Kagorogoro cell in Bufunda Division said the government SAGE cash was “keeping a smile on the faces of older persons”.
