Rotary Club of Mbarara has unveiled a strategy to collect about UGX 1,000,000,000 in the drive to equip the Pediatrics and Child health department at Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.
Godlive Nayebare, the Mbarara Rotary club president made the revelation on Monday while launching the Mbarara safe Motherhood Run scheduled for 26th March 2023.
Nayebare said all the proceeds collected in this 6th Motherhood Run will go to the pediatric department at Mbarara referral hospital adding that they are selling the running kits at UGX 20,000 which can be picked at the rotary house and other selling points and their partners.
Dr. Elias Kumbakumba, the head of Pediatrics and Child health department at Mbarara regional referral hospital revealed that the equipment available is not enough compared to the numbers they admit noting that they admit at least 250 babies every month.
Rita Atukwasa, the Mbarara City woman Member of Parliament called upon the public to come and participate in this run saying, this is a noble cause where everyone should extend their hand.
The Uganda joint security forces have released and handed over Turkana suspects to the Turkana County Government of the Republic of Kenya.
During the exercise held at Moroto Army barracks, the Uganda security side was led by Brig Gen Felix Busizoori, 3 Division deputy commander of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) who handed over the six(6) suspects to his counterpart, Peter Eripete, the County Secretary and head of Public service , Turkana County Government in the Republic of Kenya.
“Following recent persistent security and diplomatic engagements between Ugandan and Kenyan authorities, we officially hand over six suspects in the gesture of EAC partnership as a sign of peaceful co-existence and brotherhood,” remarked Brig Gen Busizoori.
The Turkana suspects were arrested alongside their kinship, the native Matheniko in different cordon and search operations where they were engaged in cattle rustling in Karamoja Sub-region between 20th to 26th February 2023.
Brig Gen Busizoori who noted that the native eight (8) Matheniko who were arrested alongside the Turkana will be subjected to Uganda’s Courts of law and also urged the Turkana county government to penalize the suspects for abusing the peaceful co-existance and cross border security arrangements.
“This diplomatic pardon should not be taken for granted as it may lead to impunity. Those who again be violating Ugandan laws will be arrested, arraigned before courts and charged of their offences,” Brig Gen Busizoori warned.
Speaking at the same occasion, on his part, Peter Eripete appreciated Ugandan authorities especially President Museveni for according Turkana pastoralists another chance to graze their animals in Ugandan territory.
He noted that officials on either side of the border of the two sister countries continue to work together to find ending solutions on how best the Turkana pastoralists can live in harmony with their host communities in Uganda.
“I categorically, state that we are not allowing anybody to come and cause criminality in the host country. Once criminality is caused on whichever side of the border, that suspect is subjected to host country’s laws,” said Eripete.
Also present were: Brigade Commanders, Lomodo Tulele, Turkana County Legal Officer, Maj Abdullah Kalicha, Kenya Liaison Officer to Uganda and senior officers.
The Karamojong and Turkana pastoralists have co-existed and shared water and pasture in the grazing belts in Uganda as guided and spelt out in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the two sister EAC countries.
However, some armed Turkana elements have continued to violate the much desired MoU since they engage themselves in criminal and rustling activities in Uganda.
In an effort to support the development of the Ugandan economy, MTN Group’s leadership has met with Ugandan President His Excellency Yoweri Kaguta Museveni on the sidelines of his two-day state visit to South Africa for discussions.
Speaking during the summit, Ralph Mupita, the MTN Group President and CEO proposed facilitating a two-day investment summit in Kampala in May 2023 in collaboration with the relevant government ministries and departments as well as the Forum of South African Businesses in Uganda to emphasize MTN’s commitment to Uganda.
The two-day event which will be a follow-up to the Uganda-South Africa trade, investment and tourism summit held in South Africa this week is designed to attract South African agro-processors and other potential investors to the east African country.
Mupita noted that the summit would facilitate the participation of those investors identified by the Uganda Investment Authority.
“We hope that by facilitating this investment summit we can support the further development of the Ugandan economy and her people,” said Mupita.
“This year, MTN celebrates 25 years in Uganda. We are driven to create shared value across our markets and offer leading digital solutions for Africa’s progress,” he added.
President Museveni said he told MTN that they shouldn’t just make money from villagers who are making calls, but also bring investors in value addition, so that they invest in agriculture, minerals, etc.

Authorities in Kiruhura district led by Grade I Magistrate court and the chief Magistrate court have delivered a lecture to Local council leaders of Kinoni sub-county on how they should follow the right laws while intervening in cases in their localities.
During the meeting at the Kinoni sub-county headquarters this week, His Worship Akankwasa Edward, the Chief Magistrate warned them to be careful in making decision without clear evidence. He noted that complainants need to go through LC I, II and III levels when seeking for justice before going to court.
In a meeting that was attended by chairpersons LCIs and LCIIs as well as Sub-county chairpersons, it was revealed that some local leaders do not use correct laws when dealing with some issues like family property bequeathing among others.
His worship Akankwasa urged these leaders to teach people to use court for lawful intervention.
Her Worship Grace Wakooli, the grade one Magistrate warned the leaders to avoid signing documents they do not fully understand.
Her Worship Wakooli also warned the authorities against bringing the tortured suspects in court. Wakooli noted that the court cannot prosecute tortured suspect instead it has to release them.
She also implored those who do it without the necessary knowledge to seek help from court in order not to be in danger.
Coleb Kanoori, the chairman LC II Keitanturegye parish said they have been making a lot of mistakes and asked for the continued provision of such lectures.
Dan Mukago, the Kiruhura district LC V Chairperson, asked Local leaders to use the knowledge they got from court authorities and correct the mistakes they have been making in their offices.
Bakunda George, the RDC Kiruhura appreciated these judges for extending judicial services to local people.
The Kiruhura District Education Officer, Merab Busingye has visited the two Primary schools which were hit by a hailstorm in Kitura sub-county, Kashongi county, Kiruhura district on Monday this week.
These schools include Mooya church of Uganda primary school were an office and library were blown off by heavy wind with rain which left books and other property destroyed and Kitura church of Uganda where a two classroom block collapsed injuring 16 pupils.
During her inspection, Busingye discovered that all the 16 pupils who were injured have been discharged from Mbarara hospital and they are recovering well.
Yekonia Beerusya, the head teacher Mooya C.O.U P/S said they have not received any help to revamp the destroyed property.
Babu Wilberforce, the head teacher Kitura C.O.U. P/S urged government to help them with rebuilding the collapsed structure.
Nathan Biite, one of parents whose children got injured in the incident said, he has showed positive improvement and is confident that his child will be fine.
Busingye advised administrators in schools to remove the children from dilapidated buildings during rainy season to avoid such incidences.
Busingye further urged the teachers to always be available at school and promised that government will find the way of helping them.
SACCO leaders in Kazo district have been advised to prepare and apply for a license and permanent registration in order to get government money through microfinance centers to use as they give loans to their customers.
This message was delivered by Tibbs Orikiriza, the manager of Uganda microfinance regulatory authority (UMRA) in charge of Saccos while speaking to Sacco leaders in the meeting held at the Kan house conference in Kazo town council on Tuesday.
Orikiririza revealed that UMRA was established under the tier IV microfinance institution and money lenders Act, 2016 to license, regulate and supervise the microfinance institution and money lenders and this was done by the parliament.
Orikiriza added that being fully registered and having license helps Saccos to get government money through microfinance center where these Saccos are given money to use.
He also advised Saccos and money lenders to register for license noting that this gives legal protection for handling the defaulters.
Peter Baguma, the district commercial officer appreciated UMRA for their commitment towards training these leaders saying that this will help them to follow the laws.
Rev Samuel Mugisha Katungunda, the Kazo district LC V chairperson asked UMRA to go and revise the laws and practices where it is necessary because defaulters are letting Saccos down.
More than 16 pupils of Kitura Primary School in Kitura sub-county, Kashongi-Kiruhura district have been injured following a hailstorm.
The pupils were injured on Monday evening when a heavy rainstorm ripped off the roof of their two classroom block and shed all the blocks.
The injured learners were mainly from primary four and primary three but serious injuries occurred to the pupils of primary Four who were rushed to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.
Kashamba James, the chairperson of LC II Kitura Parish said that the heavy rainfall started around 4 pm until late in the night and was characterized by hail storms and strong winds.
Kashamba added that the rain also affected garden crops in the parishes of Kitura and Nyaburunga.
He further kindly requested the government to intervene and help the school together with affected people’s gardens to get what to eat.
Leokadia Byakatonda, the LC III chairperson Kitura sub-county revealed that no one has died and others who were taken to the hospitals are not in bad condition where she prayed for a quick recovery for them.
Byakatonda also challenged parents to provide a good and strong classroom for their children and sending signals to other schools to always avoid shoddy work.
The Minister for Gender, Labor and social development, Betty Amongi has revealed that the Ministry is making a progress in economic empowerment of women in the country.
While visiting the women projects who got money from the Uganda women Entrepreneurship program (UWEP) in Kiruhura district last week, Amongi revealed that more money is on the way to finance the successful projects.
Minister Amongi said women doing projects including, goat rearing, bull fattening and others will be able to borrow money to support branding, marketing, certification among others.
Enid Mwesigye, the chairperson for Kiruhura district Women’s council said thanks to the support of president Museveni and the NRM government, women have gotten a chance to develop economically.

Parents in Kazo district have been advised to invest in education as one way to liberate their families from poverty.
Nkoreki Chrissy Abel, the former MP Aspirant Kazo county made the remarks while speaking as a guest of honour during a thanksgiving and fundraising ceremony at Ntambazi primary school.
The fundraising which was aimed towards the completion of the school’s two classroom block was on Sunday held at Ntambazi church of Uganda in Kazo sub-county, Kazo district.
Rev Samuel Mugisha Katugunda, the Kazo district LC V chairperson challenged the school administrators noting that lack of classrooms does not mean failing to perform well in his understanding.
Katugunda further called upon the teachers and other concerned people in schools to fight for academic excellence.
In his remarks, Robert Agume, the Kazo district education officer (DEO) urged parents and teachers to join hands to improve learning in schools.
Speaking at the same function, Naboth Nandeeba, the operations manager of Kazo FM radio, asked pupils, teachers and parents to play their roles and make accountability for what they are supposed to do in order to excel.
Henry Kikuto, the chairman of the old boys and old girls association said the major challenge with this school is that they don’t have classrooms which means there is of lack of pupils’ shelter at the school.

The Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Kazo, Al-Hajji Mawiya Lule has tasked farmers in Burunga sub-county, Kazo district to corporate in order to defeat cattle theft in Kazo district.
Mawiya made the remarks while attending the security meeting organized by security authorities of Burunga held at Burunga sub-county headquarters on Friday to address the rampant cattle theft in this sub-county.
RDC Mawiya revealed that fighting against cattle theft is everyone’s responsibility noting that everyone in the neighborhood has some responsibility to ensure everyone’s safety where he also urged farmers to care about their animals by providing security.
Rev Samuel Mugisha Katungunda, the district LC V chairperson told the meeting that the district has started a new chapter of fighting cattle theft and warned the chairperson LC I against misusing stamps emphasizing that they are going to lose them.
Samuel Rumari, the chairperson of LC III Burunga sub-county who called the meeting revealed that the only challenge that is causing cattle stealing is untouchable people.
Several other farmers in this area led by Aaron Kishokye, the district councilor representing Burunga sub-county promised that they will dedicate themselves to working hand in hand to fight cattle theft.
