Mother arrested for murdering 5months old child

A 21-year-old woman, Charity Ayebazibwe, has been arrested by police in Bushenyi District on allegations of infanticide following the death of her five-months-old child. The incident reportedly occurred on February 27 at around 9:00 PM in Kigongo LC 1, Kyamuhunga Sub County.

Martial Tumusiime, spokesperson for the Greater Bushenyi Police, confirmed the details of the case, stating that the child had been suffering from a severe illness prior to her death. Ayebazibwe, a bar operator and resident of Bugongo LC I, had not been in contact with the child’s father for some time due to issues of child neglect.

Following the child’s death, Tumusiime reported that Ayebazibwe claimed she had nowhere to bury the body and subsequently disposed of it in a pit latrine. Concerns from local residents arose on March 17, when they noticed Ayebazibwe with only one child despite knowing she had previously cared for two.

When questioned by community members, Ayebazibwe admitted that her baby had died and disclosed the location of the body leading to her arrest and further police inquiries.

The investigations into the matter are ongoing as police seek to determine the full circumstances surrounding the child’s death.

Businesswoman murdered in Kabwohe

Police in Sheema District are investigating a shocking incident of murder and aggravated robbery that occurred on March 17 in Rushoroza Cell, Nyanga Ward, Kabwohe Division. The body of 25-year-old Anitah Nsimenta, a local businesswoman was discovered in her home, prompting an immediate search for the unknown assailants.

According to Martial Tumusiime, spokesperson for the Greater Bushenyi Police, Nsimenta was the wife of Cenan Atwiine, a resident of Nyihanga Town in Rwampara District where he runs a business. Concerned after several unsuccessful attempts to reach his wife by phone, Atwiine traveled to her residence to check on her.

Upon arrival, Atwiine noticed that Nsimenta’s mattress and bag were missing. He reported the matter to the police and while he was at the station, neighbors alerted him that they had found Nsimenta’s body lying in the corridor leading to the bathroom.

Tumusiime reported that the deceased was discovered with a sisal rope around her neck and blood was oozing from her nose and mouth alongside visible injuries to her face.

Local residents have named a boda boda rider identified as Jonathan as a key suspect in the case, indicating he may have fled the scene with an unspecified amount of cash, Nsimenta’s mattress, suitcase and other household items.

The police are actively pursuing leads in the investigation as they seek to apprehend those responsible for this heinous crime. As the inquiry continues, authorities urge anyone with information about the case to come forward to assist in the investigation.

Bushenyi District NUP registrar granted bail

Ms. Pathy Mbabazi, the Bushenyi District National Unity Platform (NUP) registrar was granted bail on Wednesday March 19 by the Grade One Magistrate’s Court in Bushenyi following her arrest on charges of computer misuse. Mbabazi was detained on April 3, in Katungu Cell, Ward 3, Ishaka Division for allegedly making hate speech against President Yoweri Museveni and his son, Muhoozi Kainerugaba who also serves as the Chief of Defence Forces.

Presiding magistrate Emmanuel Niyokwizera stated that Mbabazi had no prior criminal record which contributed to the court’s decision to grant her bail. After considering the submissions from both the defense and the prosecution, Niyokwizera ruled in favor of bail, setting the amount at Ugx100,000. Additionally, each of the sureties provided by the accused was required to sign for Ugx 5,000,000 although this was not a cash bail.

The court has scheduled Mbabazi’s next appearance for April 16, 2025. Niyokwizera assured that the bail money would be refunded after the resolution of the case.

Joshua Tumukunde, the lead defense lawyer from Mugisha Arnold & Company Advocates argued that Mbabazi is a first-time offender and a single mother, advocating for her release.

In response to the ruling, Godfrey Bainomugisha, the NUP District chairman, expressed satisfaction stating that the court’s decision demonstrated that justice prevails even in controversial matters. Bainomugisha emphasized that such minor issues should not provoke anger from the president and his family.

The case has attracted significant attention, reflecting ongoing tensions in the political landscape of Uganda.

M23 withdraw from peace Talks with Congo amid Sanctions

The M23 rebel group backed by Rwanda has withdrawn from peace talks with the Congolese government which were scheduled to begin this week in Angola’a capital,Luanda. The group’s spokesman, Lawrence Kanyuka, cited international sanctions imposed by the European Union on several M23 members as the primary reason for their withdrawal stating that the sanctions have rendered the dialogue “impracticable.” Kanyuka also highlighted ongoing military offensives by Congo’s army in the conflict-torn region as a contributing factor undermining the potential for successful talks.

“The consequences of these sanctions and the continued offensives against us mean our organization can no longer continue to participate in the discussions,” Kanyuka stated in a press release.

Despite M23’s withdrawal, the Congolese government expressed its commitment to the dialogue in Angola. A delegation had already traveled to Luanda vowing to proceed with discussions aimed at resolving the ongoing conflict in eastern Congo. Tina Salama, spokesperson for President Felix Tshisekedi, confirmed the delegation’s presence.

The conflict escalated significantly in January when M23 rebels advanced capturing the important city of Goma and later Bukavu in February. Angola which has taken on a mediatory role in the conflict had planned to facilitate direct negotiations between the two parties starting Tuesday.

Previous peace talks between Congo and Rwanda were abruptly canceled in December after Rwanda insisted on direct negotiations with M23 which Congo flatly rejected. Tshisekedi characterized dialogue with the group as a “red line” during a speech to the diplomatic corps earlier this year.

M23 is among approximately 100 armed groups competing for control in eastern Congo, a region rich in minerals and situated near the Rwandan border resulting in one of the most severe humanitarian crises globally where over 7 million people have been displaced due to the ongoing conflict.

International observers report that M23 receives support from around 4,000 Rwandan troops, and there have been threats from the rebels to advance towards Congo’s capital, Kinshasa.

In response to the ongoing violence and human rights abuses associated with the conflict, the United Nations Human Rights Council recently launched a commission to investigate allegations of atrocities committed by both sides.

Compounding regional tensions, Rwanda severed diplomatic relations with Belgium on Monday and expelled Belgian diplomats following Belgium’s suspension of development aid to Rwanda last month. Rwandan President Paul Kagame accused Belgium of attempting to destabilize Rwanda.

The EU imposed sanctions on five Rwandan nationals including the commander of Rwandan special forces in eastern Congo and four Congolese nationals affiliated with the M23 including its political leader Bertrand Bisimwa. These sanctions extend to Rwanda’s sole gold refinery, Gasabo Gold Refinery which the EU accused of engaging in “illegal extraction and trafficking” of natural resources from eastern Congo.

The eastern region of Congo is not only rich in gold but also holds significant deposits of critical minerals used in smartphone and computer production. According to a UN report, M23 generated approximately $300,000 monthly from its control of a mining area in eastern Congo last year.

Meanwhile, the U.S. State Department expressed interest in developing a partnership in the mining sector in Congo confirming preliminary discussions have begun. President Tshisekedi met with U.S. Special Envoy to Congo, Rep. Ronny Jackson, on Sunday to explore potential security and economic collaborations emphasizing the need for peace to attract American investment in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Bushenyi Primary Teachers College on spot over Ugx2.8b misuse

The Bushenyi District Public Accounts Committee has initiated investigations into the financial management of 2.8 billion shillings allocated for operational costs at Bushenyi Primary Teachers College.

Committee chairperson Hajj Mohammad Tibesigwa Kamadi reported significant irregularities in how the funds were utilized. He accused the college principal, Aisha Nyangoma, and bursar, Harriet Kuribakanya, of orchestrating these discrepancies within the institution.

Concerns were raised regarding the lack of accountability for various activities conducted at the college, as well as instances where expenditures exceeded the approved budget. Committee member Johnson Nagasha highlighted an alarming case where the college, serving only 74 students, reportedly spent 242 million shillings on food supplies within a two-month period.

Additionally, Nyansio Biryomisho, chairperson of Nyakabirizi Division, pointed out that many suppliers received payments without adhering to proper procurement protocols. The ongoing investigations aim to uncover the full extent of the financial mismanagement and ensure accountability within the institution.

Mubajje Granted Controversial Five-Year Extension

The College of Eminent Sheikhs (Majlis Al-Ulama) in Uganda has controversially extended the tenure of Mufti Sheikh Shaban Mubajje for five more years despite concerns regarding the legality of the decision.

Mubajje who has led the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) for 24 years was expected to retire upon reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70 as mandated by the 1986 UMSC constitution. However, UMSC chairperson Prof. Muhammadi Lubega Kisambira stated that legal advisors found no constitutional impediments to Mubajje seeking another term under the new 2022 UMSC constitution.

“With the help of UMSC lawyer Dr. Makmot Adam Kibwanga, they found no constitutional contradiction regarding Dr. Shaban Ramadhan Mubajje,” said Kisambira. He emphasized that the decision was aimed at ensuring continuity and stability within UMSC leadership.

In addition to Mubajje’s appointment, Sheikh Muhammad Ali Waiswa has been named the First Deputy Mufti. Waiswa, a close associate of Mubajje for two decades will join him in leadership under the new terms. However, this move has drawn criticism from some within the Muslim community who argue it violates the constitution.

Legal challenges have emerged with a judicial review application filed at the Civil Division of the High Court in Kampala questioning Mubajje’s eligibility for another term. Justice Emmanuel Baguma has set a hearing for March 19 warning that any endorsement of Mubajje during the pending case could nullify the decision.

Despite the backlash, Kisambira asserted that the UMSC would continue its operations uninterrupted. “We as UMSC did not go to court and are free to proceed with our business as usual. There is no injunction or order preventing any operations at UMSC,” he said.

City lawyer Ali Kankaka, involved in drafting the new UMSC constitution, countered the extension’s validity, stating, “The Majlis Al Ulama has the power to vet and elect a Mufti only when the position is vacant, and the general assembly is merely informed for noting.” The controversy surrounding Mubajje’s extension continues to unfold as the legal proceedings advance.

Man Arrested for Murder of 68-Year-Old in Sheema District

A 38-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the murder of a 68-year-old man in Sheema District. The incident occurred on March 10, 2025, at 12:00 AM in Nyamwambu Cell, Kasana Sub-County.

According to Martial Tumusiime, Greater Bushenyi Region Police Spokesperson, the suspect, Fred Murangira, along with an accomplice, Obed Bariho, allegedly assaulted the victim, Patrick Kanwa, a resident of Nyakibere 2 Cell leading to his death. The motive appears to stem from an extramarital affair between Kanwa and Murangira’s wife, Ketra Manywoha.

Murangira had reportedly warned Kanwa to end the affair but on the night of the incident, Kanwa visited Manywoha resulting in a confrontation that escalated to violence.

Police investigating the scene recovered broken pieces of wood with suspected blood stains and found Kanwa’s body showing severe injuries including a head injury and a broken left leg.

In the aftermath, angry residents took action against the suspects destroying their banana plantations and houses. While Bariho has been apprehended, Murangira remains at large and a manhunt is underway to capture him. The police continue to investigate the incident. The body of the deceased was been taken to Kitagata Hospital for a postmortem examination.
