Farmers encouraged to protect environment
John Baptist Asiimwe, the Principal Production Officer of Kazo District has emphasized the vital importance of environmental protection for a sustainable future during a series of meetings held yesterday in three sub-counties: Burunga, Rwemikoma, and Migina. The sessions aimed to raise awareness about the Uganda Climate-Smart Agricultural Transformation Project (UCSATP) focusing on educating stakeholders about the project’s objectives, benefits and strategies to promote resilient, sustainable and climate-smart agricultural practices across Uganda.
Addressing local farmers, Asiimwe highlighted that the project which is set to run for six years is implemented by the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries in collaboration with agencies including the National Agricultural Research Organization (NARO), the National Animal Genetics Resources Centre and Data Bank (NAGRC & DB), and the Uganda National Meteorological Authority. The initiative seeks to increase agricultural productivity, improve market access and build resilience within key value chains, enabling farmers to adapt to climate change and respond effectively to emergencies.
“The goal is to support Ugandan farmers in adopting climate-smart technologies and management practices that will help them increase yields, household incomes, and withstand climatic shocks,” Asiimwe explained.
In related remarks, Dickson Bigirwa, the Forestry Officer of Kazo District called on residents to actively participate in environmental conservation efforts. He urged them to plant more trees and protect existing forests while discouraging swamp encroachment, which threatens ecosystems and sustainable land use.
Furthermore, Ham Rubainika, District Councilor for Kyampagara Sub-County and Chairperson of the Local Council 5 (LC5), encouraged residents to open savings accounts in SACCOs and banks. He emphasized that saving money is crucial for securing their future and fostering economic stability within the community.
These initiatives reflect Kazo District’s commitment to sustainable development, environmental conservation, and climate resilience, aligning with national efforts to promote climate-smart agriculture and improve livelihoods for local residents.
