Bushenyi District Council Rejects Land Donation Motion to PIBID/BIRDC
Bushenyi District Council convened yesterday and unanimously rejected a motion to donate a five-hectare piece of land to the Presidential Initiative on Banana Industrial Development (PIBID) and the Banana Research and Development Centre (BIRDC).
The motion which was read by the district Chairman, Jafari Basajabalaba indicated that Kyabugimbi Subcounty had passed a resolution on December 15, 2025 to donate the land for the construction of a collection center aimed at supporting banana farmers.
During the spirited debate that ensued, councillors called for further investigation. They argued that the motion should be referred back to the relevant committee to assess the potential benefits the subcounty and community might gain from donating government land to BIRDC.
Hon. Denis Nayebare the LCV councilor for Ruhumuro Subcounty emphasized that the motion was rejected because PIBID did not follow proper procedures for acquiring government land.
Councillors consented to referring the matter for further scrutiny to determine whether the land donation would indeed benefit the residents of Kyabugimbi subcounty.
Apollo Aryaguma expressed disappointment stating that Kyabugimbi Subcounty was actively seeking to create a market for their bananas and believed that the land donation could have supported that goal.
The council’s decision underscores the need for thorough review and due process in land transactions involving government resources and community development initiatives.
