Hon. Kamara, Supporters Arrested
Police in Kisoro District are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding an alleged case of electoral violence involving prominent political figures. Hon. Kamara John, the incumbent Member of Parliament for Bufumbira North and a candidate contesting for the same seat as an independent along with his bodyguards and supporters have been arrested in connection with the incident.
The events unfolded on November 25, 2025, around 2:00 PM when police reports indicate that Hon. Kamara, his military-style bodyguards and supporters were involved in violence related to the ongoing election campaign. At approximately 9:00 AM, Rtd. Commissioner of Police Fortunate Habyara, a candidate for the same parliamentary seat, reported at Nyaarubuye Police Station that one of his supporters Eragena Emmanuel had been assaulted by supporters of Hon. Kamara at Kageyo/Rugabano Trading Centre.
Responding to the report, Officer in Charge (OC) Cpl. Obworot Samuel and PC Mandali Charles responded to the scene. Upon arrival, they found the victim in one of Hon. Kamara’s vehicles, tied up and bleeding. As officers attempted to assist the injured supporter, they were reportedly assaulted, threatened at gunpoint and disarmed. During the chaos, Pc. Mandali was forcibly detained alongside the victim inside the same vehicle.
According to ASP Elly Maate, the Kigezi region Police spokesperson revealed that a specialized team that intercepted the two vehicles involved and brought them to the Kisoro main police station for further investigation. Maate further said that Kamara, his bodyguards and several supporters are in police custody with investigations ongoing to establish the full details of the incident.
The police have not issued a formal statement beyond confirming the arrests and the ongoing investigation. The incident has raised concerns over electoral violence in the district with authorities urging calm and adherence to the rule of law as they work to ensure a peaceful electoral process.
