Ibanda: 50 year old man remanded for allegedly burning neighbour’s banana and coffee plantations
A 50-year-old man identified as Silverio Byaruhanga has been charged and remanded to Nyabuhikye Prison over reported failure to control a fire that destroyed a neighbour’s property.
It is alleged that on July 30th, Byaruhanga, a resident of Kobuhura, Nyamarebe sub-county in Ibanda North County, started the fire in his land but failed to control it, it then spread and destroyed cassava, a banana plantation and 45 coffee trees belonging to his neighbor, Denis Kamwesiga.
While appearing before Ibanda grade one magistrate, Esther Birungi Bigabwa, Byaruhanga denied the accusations and told court that he was surprised when Police arrested him as he going to a meeting last Sunday over the case of starting the fire.
Prosecution asked for an adjournment, saying inquiries into the matter are still on going.
Byaruhanga, who looked frail, told court that he was sick and asked to be released on court bail as he had no sureties.
However, the magistrate informed him that the court does that only in exceptional situations.
Byaruhanga has been remanded to Nyabuhikye Prison and advised to look for sureties and apply for bail when he returns to court before the chief magistrate for mention of the case on August 31.
