Kazo: Gen Elly Tumwine laid to rest

Thousands of mourners have today gathered at the ancestral home of Former Security Minister, Gen Elly Tumwine in Mukuru village, Rwemikoma Sub -County, Kazo district for his final send off.

The chief mourner; Prime Minister; Rt. Hon.Robinah Nabbanja, who represented the president at the funeral described Tumwine as a great patriot, freedom fighter, and genuine friend.

Nabbanja told mourners she would remember Gen Tumwine as a “straightforward mentor of many and a man who spoke what he believed to be true no matter what.

Several dignitaries graced Tumwine’s final send-off including; Hon John Nasasira, former Minister of Works and Transport, General Edward Katumba Wamala, the Minister of Works and Transport, Hon. Jacob Oboth Oboth, the Minister of State for Defence, Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, the Minister of Internal Affairs, Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi, the Minister of Security, Rtd. Lt. Gen. Henry Tumukunde, former Security Minister and Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu, former Army Commander, members of parliament, representatives from security agencies, veteran politicians, religious leaders, and local leaders among others.

Gen Kahinda Otafiire told mourners that Gen Elly Tumwine sent him a message before he left for Nairobi saying he was not coming back and also asked him not to divert from what they were fighting for.

One of Gen Elly Tumwine’s daughters asked the public to forgive him; “Daddy talked about forgiveness during his last moments on earth. I ask for forgiveness from all those my dad wronged and even those who wronged him, he forgave you. May we choose forgiveness and peace from now on,” said Edna Tumwine.

Gen Tumwine, 68, was buried just hours before the event in which he was set to officially be retired from the army which he has served since 1979.

Tumwine who is Uganda’s longest serving army representative in Parliament died from Lung cancer at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi, Kenya on Thursday, August 25th.

Gen Tumwine was an educator, professional artist and a military officer.

Gen. Elly Tumwine who shot the first bullet that initiated the NRA Liberation Struggle, served as an army commander and Security Minister was duly accorded a 17-gun salute.

Gen Elly Tumwine was accorded a 17-gun salute to honour his contribution to the UPDF and the country in general.

Man Kills wife, two children buries them behind his home

The territorial Police in Kampala are investigating circumstances under which a man reportedly killed his wife and 2 children and buried them near his house in Wakiso District. 


Luke Owoyesigire, the Deputy Police Spokesperson Kampala Metropolitan, confirmed the incident and identified the suspect as Faisal Muwanguzi, a resident of Buloba-Bwotansimbi village, in Buloba Parish, Wakiso district. 

Owoyesigire revealed that police detectives stormed the Muwaguzi’s home following a tip-off by his children who issued a complaint against their father. 

According to local leaders, the matter came forth when the suspect’s children (aged seven and nine) were placed under child care after his arrest and subsequent remand to prison for child torture.  

Joanita Mukalazi, the Child and Family Welfare Officer in Wakiso district, explained that the children have been living under fear following constant threats from their father to the extent that they couldn’t reveal the whereabouts of their mother after she had just requested to go work as a maid in the Middle East.

Mukalazi noted that while interviewing the children, one of them revealed how their father had killed their mother identified as Nabukenya Mariam Muwanguzi, 33, & their two siblings identified as Muwanguzi Mukisa aged 2 years & another of 3 months identified as Muwanguzi Ngabo and buried their bodies near their house.

She added that the rescued children led security personnel and local council leaders to the spot where the three bodies were exhumed.

Owoyesigire said that on Wednesday, the police team comprising of homicide and forensic experts, scene of crime officers and other officers from the operations directorate of Uganda Police Force exhumed 3 bodies (the body of an adult and 2 bodies of children) believed to have been killed about 5 months ago near the suspect’s home and took them to Mulago National Referral Hospital for postmortem examination.

The area residents revealed that Muwanguzi has been a harsh man who did not associate with anyone in the area. 

Dan Kiwanuka, the chairperson of Buloba-Bwotansimbi village, says that Muwanguzi often tortured his children, which prompted them to seek refuge from the police. 



He added that Muwanguzi has been arraigned before the village court on several occasions for different offenses before he decided to block everyone from accessing his fence.   

Mukalazi says that the children have been handed to a children’s home where they are undergoing counseling and rehabilitation and investigations into the matter continue.

Head Teachers asked to avoid increasing school fees

Head teachers and their deputies both in government and private secondary schools have been called upon to tighten their supervision on their staff members if learners are to perform better.

Speaking during the ongoing annual general meeting of all head teachers and their deputies under their umbrella Association of Secondary School Head teachers of Uganda (ASSHA) at Ntare school in Mbarara city, Sam Kuloba, the commissioner for secondary education in the ministry of education and sports noted that some heads of school are not doing their part and this has left many learners unable to move past the post covid-19 effects.

Kuloba advised the school heads to always listen to grievances of learners through designated communication channels as one way of eliminating the tendency of strikes in schools.

Kuloba noted that some school heads tend to ignore the concerns of the learners and this makes the learners feel isolated hence forcing them to strike.

He also revealed that as the ministry, they are looking into concerns raised by head teachers about the over-stays of some teachers at their work stations and end up turning schools into their homes.

Jimmy Turyagenda, the host head teacher of Ntare school who doubles as the outgoing general secretary for ASSHA asked his fellow colleagues to be more creative and innovative by creating projects that are money making to avoid stressing the parents all the time increasing school fees.

Turyagyenda noted that this has made many parents keep on changing schools which affects the learners’ performance.

According to the news sources, the president and first lady Janet Kataha Museveni who doubles as the Minister of Education and Sports are expected to close the ongoing workshop on Saturday.

14 year old allegedly tortured by bishop over UGX 10,000

The Territorial Police in Kampala Metropolitan Police and Kira Division, has charged to court, Bishop Kibuuka Jacinto, of the Evangelical Orthodox Church, located at Mamre Prayer Center, Namugongo, for the alleged Aggravated Torture of Othieno Denis, a 14 year old pupil of Christ the King Junior School, Namungoona.

Fred Enanga, the Police Spokesman revealed in a statement that the facts gathered indicate that on the 22.08.2022, the victim was at Mamre Prayer Center, with his mother, Kemigisha Juliet, who works as a cleaner. The mother left him behind and went to town.

“It was during her absence that the Bishop called the victim and started demanding his money, UGX 10,000 which was allegedly stolen by him. Instead of referring the matter to police, he started beating and kicking the 14 year old victim. He then dragged him into his car and continued beating him as they drove to the mother’s home at Namugongo-Janda in Kira Municipality, to recover the money,” read the statement in part.

Enanga added that it took the intervention of the landlady, who rescued the victim and rushed him to Nuwa Hospital, Nabusugwe-Mukono, where he was admitted. The victim is recovering from the injuries which were classified as Grievous in nature.

Enanga also revealed that the police at Kira upon receiving the complaint, instituted inquiries and obtained very clear accounts of the incident, with relevant witnesses statements. They retrieved medical documents and reconstructed the scene at Mamre Prayer Center.

The Bishop also recorded a statement and was released on bond. It was however, canceled on the 24.08.2022, after charges of Aggravated Torture were sanctioned against him. He was caused to appear in court at Kira on the 25.08.2022.

Police also condemned all acts of torture, harassment and intimidation by church leaders against vulnerable persons. Noting that the acts are not consistent with the values of church and not justified under any circumstance.

Gen Tumwine succumbs to lung cancer

Former Security Minister General Elly Tumwine has passed on this morning at Aga khan Hospital in Nairobi.

Yoweri K. Museveni, the president of the Republic of Uganda/CIC of the UPDF revealed that his bush war comrade Gen Elly Tumwine succumbed to lung cancer this morning at 5:46 am in Nairobi.

“With deep sorrow, I announce the death of General Elly Tumwiine which occurred at 5:46am this morning in Nairobi, from lung cancer. Condolences to his family, to the NRA-UPDF- NRM fraternity and to all Ugandans,” said president Museveni in his condolence message.

Born on 12th April 1954, in Burunga, in the then Mbarara District, present day Kazo district, Tumwine is one of the first 27 Museveni kadogos that started the five year bush war in Luwero that brought the National Resistance Army and National Resistance Movement into power in Uganda in 1986.

In 1978, he interrupted his teaching career to join the FRONASA forces with 9000 others led by president Museveni, Gen Tumwine went to Monduli Military School in Tanzania to fight the Idi Amin regime.

In 1981, when Museveni went to the bush to form the National Resistance Army (NRA), Elly Tumwine went with him. He is reported to have fired the first shot in the NRA War on the 6th February, 1981, at Kabamba Army Barracks.

In a statement released this morning, president Museveni says that he taught Gen Tumwine at Burunga Primary School in 1967 while he was a student teacher before joining University later that year.

He attended Burunga Primary School, Mbarara High School and St. Henry’s College Kitovu, before joining Makerere University, where in 1977, he graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art together with the Diploma in Education; abbreviated: BA (FA)/Dip. Ed. He specialized in the history of art painting.

He subsequently graduated from the Cadet Officers Course at the Tanzania Military Academy at Monduli. He also attended the Senior Command Course at the Uganda Senior Command and Staff College at Kimaka, in Jinja, Uganda, being a member of the pioneer class that graduated in 2005. Tumwine also holds further military qualifications from the military academy in Vystry, in the Soviet Union.

He is a retired Ugandan military officer, professional artist, and educator.

During the fighting between the NRA and the UNLA, Tumwine sustained facial injuries that led to loss of sight in one eye.

Gen. Tumwine has been part of the leadership of the NRA- UPDF as well as serving the government in various capacities until he retired from active military service in July 2022. 

In 1984, Tumwine was named Commander of the Army, a post he held until 1987. Over the years, he served in various positions, including:

* Minister of State for Defence in 1989.
* Director General of the External Security Organization (ESO) from 1994 until 1996.
* Presidential Adviser from 1996 until 1998
* Chairman of the High Command Appeals Committee from 1986 until 1999.

He was also continuously represented the UPDF in the Ugandan Parliament since 1986.

In September 2005, he was promoted to the rank of general in the UPDF and named to chair the UPDF General Court Marshal.

President Museveni described the late as a dedicated and hard-working cadre.

It is said that the tough speaking General has been battling with sickness for some time and has been in and out of hospitals until today, when he breathed his last at the Nairobi-based Aga Khan Hospital.

Western Uganda’s Ray G holds another successful concert

Thousands of people flocked Mbarara University Inn in Mbarara City on August 20th to attend Western Uganda’s singing sensation Ray G’s second edition concert dubbed Ray G Live Concert.

Arguably Western Uganda’s best musician, Muhairwe Reagan popularly known as Ray G had his concert pull thousands from near and far, Ankole and beyond on Saturday.

The concert whose biggest sponsor was MTN Uganda, had concert tickets going for UGX 10,000 ordinary, UGX 30,000 VIP while a table was being sold at UGX 500,000.

Ray G has earned his respect by his ability to make his indigenous language sound sweet and romantic.  With his melodious voice, he effortlessly knits love themed RnB, Afrobeat, and Reggae songs in Runyankole.

Ray G has maintained his singing style; from the days of Enshazi, Nokigambahoki, Mureebe, Weeshe, Omusheeshe, there is a lot of Ray G music that Ugandans have fed on that by the time of the concert, many of the people on the Mbarara University Inn grounds had more than 10 songs they badly wanted him to perform.

At exactly 11:45PM, Ray G hit the stage with his cross country hit Mureebe that sent the crowd wild as they sang along word for word.

In his two-time stage appearances, he performed his other hit songs including; Make a Way, Eizooba, Omwigarire, Nuunu, Nkaronda, Ringaaniza, Humuura, Naaba Nkwine, Tayari, Hiihi my Love, Rukundo which he performed with Serena Bata, and his latest collabo with Levixone; Yoya among others.

The show featured performances from Ziza Bafana, Megatone, Rasta Charz, while Western Uganda’s celebrated MC, MC Kacheche was the main host of the event.

The eager audience cheered exhilaratingly at the announcement of each performer and sang along to the stars’ songs as each act dazzled them.

Born 12 June 1992, Ray G who mainly sings heritage music in Runyankore, started singing in 2009 while at school until 2014 when he broke through with his hit song “Amarari”.

On 14 September 2019, he held a successfully concert for his celebration for 10 years in the music industry, he broke a record of staging a highly attended concert in Mbarara City, Western Uganda.

In 2021, Ray G won an award of the best years act from Western Uganda from the New Janzi Awards aimed at recognizing Ugandan musicians in the creative art industry.

Ray G has gained East African recognition after he shared big stages with international artists like Eddy Kenzo, Meddy and Jose Chameleon and secured collaborations with stars like Spice Diana, Levixone, Geo Steady, and the Covid-19 hit that featured all stars.

2 year old child murdered by step father

Police in Rubirizi district are hunting for a one Mwijukye Vicent for allegedly murdering a child aged 2 years and 4months.

Martial Tumusiime, the greater Bushenyi region police spokesperson confirmed the incident and said the case was reported by the mother identified as Tushemeriwe Scovia, 30, while the deceased was identified as Nansuna faith, all residents of Rwemitangu village, Rwemitangu parish Rutoto Sub-county, Rubirizi district.

It’s alleged that the suspect, Mwijukye cohabited with the mother of the deceased when she had already produced the girl with another man and the suspect had been saying that he didn’t want the deceased child.

Tumusiime said that  on Monday at about 19;45pm, the suspect came back home, picked the girl(deceased), deceived her with sweet potato, he moved with her for almost 1.5 kilometers to the bush with an axe, hit the kid on the head, dumped her body in the bush and disappeared.

The body was removed and taken to Rugazi health center IV for postmortem examination as investigations into the matter continue.

Kazo: Residents decry the use of dirty water for domestic use

Residents in villages of Mbogo I, Mbogo Parish, Kanoni Sub-County and Karitutsi II, Bishozi Parish, Engari Sub-County, all in Kazo district are struggling with the problem of using dirty water for domestic activities.

According to the Local council one chairpersons of both villages, Mr. Fred Mugasha of Mbogo I cell and Mr. Godfrey Muhimbisa of Karitutsi II cell, the locals are using this kind of water for drinking, cooking, washing, bathing and for their animals.

Children draw water from one of the available water sources in the area.

The leaders together with locals said they are worried about contracting the diseases related to contaminated water.

Jennifer Muheesi, the District woman Member of Parliament revealed that she has already intervened, and there are plans to construct boreholes for both villages.

According to her P.A, Obed Timbaganya, the identifcation of places where these boreholes are to be drilled was completed on Tuesday, 23rd August, 2022.

Timbaganya added that there are similar plans to also extend the same kind of service to the citizens of Kagarama village in Kanoni, Kaaro village in Kyengando parish-Engari Sub-county and Kakoni Ward in Buremba Town council.

Muheesi noted that in a few months, the problem will get solved completely.

123 Church leaders promoted after 10 years in service

123 lay readers have been elevated in their service after spending over 10 years in service.

Speaking at a function that took place at St James cathedral Ruharo, Rev Dr Fred Sheldon Mwesigwa, the Bishop of Ankole diocese congratulated the lay readers upon reaching this level and urged them to preach the gospel with the utmost confidence.

The Bishop assured them that they are pillars of the church and the church is always open to assist them as they execute the lord’s work.

Hon Amos Kakunda, the Member of Parliament for Rwampara County asked the lay readers to serve the Christians equally and use the land at their areas of work for development.

Herbert Takirwa, the chairperson lay reader’s Ankole diocese who doubles as the lay leader Rwobuyenje C.O.U Kinoni archdeaconry, asked his comrades to continue preaching the word of God that comforts Christians.

The Lay readers received new clergy robes, and certificates as sign of appreciation and recognition of their experience in the new level of service.
