Isingiro North MP race hots Up
The electoral race for the parliamentary seat in Isingiro North Constituency, Isingiro District is intensifying as candidates gear up for the upcoming 2026 general elections scheduled for February 15, 2026.
In the 2021 parliamentary polls, seven candidates contested for the seat. Hon. Bright Kanyontore Rwamirama of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) was declared the winner with 49,066 votes. He was followed by TUHAIRWE Nicholas of FDC with 2,823 votes, AYEBARE Prossy, an independent candidate, who garnered 2,641 votes. Other contenders included RUTAHWAIRE Anthony (ANT) with 1,365 votes, TWEBAZE Keneth (Independent) with 1,048 votes, TUBUHABURWA Jim (NUP) with 956 votes, and MUKUNDANE Collins (Independent) with 826 votes.
For the 2026 elections, five candidates werenominated for the seat. They are James Atwiine (Independent), Kassim Kagwisagye (DP), Rutahwire Anthony (ANT), Ankunda Best Arnold (PFF), and the incumbent Lt. Col. (rtd) Bright Kanyontore Rwamirama.
However, the race faces some challenges as Kassim Kagwisagye of the Democratic Party has withdrawn from the race. James Atwiine was disqualified by the Electoral Commission on grounds of lacking the minimum academic requirements. Additionally, Ankunda Best Arnold and Rutahwire Anthony are facing allegations of falsifying voter signatures during their nominations, which are currently under investigation by electoral authorities.
As the campaign period progresses, all eyes remain on Rwamirama as he seeks to defend his seat amid these ongoing developments.
