Looming famine in Bushenyi
Residents of Kyanamira in Rwenjeru Ward, Nyakabirizi Division, Bushenyi Ishaka Municipality have expressed fears of a looming famine following heavy rains that struck the area yesterday. The torrential downpour caused extensive damage to crops and gardens with residents reporting the destruction of banana plantations, cassava and other food crops vital for their sustenance and income.
Leo Muhanguzi, the LC1 Chairman of the area voiced concerns over the impact of the weather on residents’ livelihoods noting that many had invested their (PDM) funds into their plantations which are now at risk of being lost. He warned that the loss of these crops could lead to food shortages and economic hardships for the community.
Night Christine, a resident of Kyanamira Village shared similar sentiments describing how the heavy rains damaged numerous gardens and plantations. She expressed worry about the possibility of a food crisis and reduced income for families who rely heavily on farming.
The community now faces an uncertain future as they await measures to address the damage caused by the storm and prevent a potential famine. Local authorities are being urged to assess the situation swiftly and provide support to affected residents.
