Ugandans run to Save River Rwizi
Ministry of water and environment in cooperation with Rwizi catchment management team supported by the World Wide Fund for nature WWF have successfully conducted the third , “Save River Rwizi Marathon 2024” aiming to strengthen guided sustainable practices and restoration efforts to prevent extinction of river Rwizi.
The grand function conducted in Mbarara city attracted development partners from several agencies, companies and organizations which comprised such as the World Wide Fund for nature WWF, Lato milk processing organization, Uganda Breweries Company Limited, Abahumuza group, National Water and Sewerage Corporation , Agency for Corporation in Research and development ACORD Uganda among several others.
The Director Water Resources Management in the ministry of water and environment Dr Callistus Tindimugaya presided over the third annual Save River Rwizi Marathon of 21 km at Boma Kamukuzi Mbarara city.
Tindimugaya revealed that there is increasing demand of water for human consumption including use in industries that give jobs and improve incomes thus calling upon the general public to continue protecting and participating in the restoration of degraded wetlands that feed rive Rwizi.
The Conservation Programs Director World Wide Fund for nature WWF Simon Peter Weredwong revealed that the purpose of conducting annual Save River Rwizi Marathon 2024 aims at increasing awareness to save rive Rwizi which is facing along of environmental related challenges that need to be addressed urgently to save river Rwizi.
He explained that as World Wide Fund for nature WWF in cooperation with other development partners are facilitating the planting of bamboo trees among others tree species to prevent pollution in order to increase water quality and quantity.
The chairperson Rwizi Catchment Management Committee and the District Chairperson Ntungamo district Sam Musinguzi Salongo says as local leadership are emphasizing sensitization of population on how to save river Rwizi and desist from encroachment.
The vice Chairperson Abahumuza team that aim at preserving and protecting river Rwizi from extinction, Mr. Kanyikirize Aaron Ikaara called upon the local leaders to stop shielding and favouring big people in government in misusing and destroy environmental features along wetlands that support life.
