Kenneth Akena killer, Mathew Kanyamunyu released from Prison
Kampala businessman, Mathew Kanyamunyu is finally a free man, having served three years and five months, instead of the five years and one month following remission.
Kanyamunyu’s troubles stemmed from the 2016 incident, in which he shot dead child rights activist, Kenneth Akena, after accusing him of scratching his car in Kampala. The Director of Public Prosecution would then withdraw charges against his Burundian girlfriend, Cynthia Munwangari whom he was with in the car, but sentenced Kanyamunyu with manslaughter on November 12, 2020.
Kanyamunyu’s murder charge was reduced to manslaughter by the Director of Public Prosecution after a plea bargaining session
Earlier before his sentence, Kanyamunyu alongside his girlfriend, Cynthia Munwangari went for a traditional ritual known as Mato Oput.
In this ceremony held at the Ker Kwaro Acholi (Acholi Chiefdom), Kanyamunyu reportedly admitted to killing the deceased and was asked to pay ten cows and three goats by the elders in Acholi.
Under the Ugandan law, the offence of manslaughter is punishable by the maximum penalty of life imprisonment under section 190 of the Penal Code Act.
