Mbarara Regional Hospital stranded with a three year old boy
Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital is stranded with a three-year-old boy after being dumped under unclear circumstances.
The child was abandoned by his father at the facility on Friday last week at around 2pm. The boy only identified as Rodgers was picked by the hospital staff who handed him over to hospital management and he is currently receiving care in the hospital’s Natasha Ward.
Alex Mbabazi, a social worker at the medical facility, revealed that they reported a case at Mbarara Central Police Station as well at the Probation office at Kamukuzi after the innocent boy was allegedly dumped by his father only identified as Bob on Friday last week.
According to the records, there was a similar incident in December,2022, where two babies were abandoned at Mbarara regional referral hospital and unfortunately one of them passed on as the hospital administration together with police were still tracing her parents. The other infant identified as Immaculate Ahimbisibwe was dumped by her mother.
Halson Kagure, the hospital Public Relations Officer stated that the hospital is still stranded with Immaculate Ahimbisibwe who was dumped at the facility in December, 2022 with complications of Spina bifida.
He however mentioned that the infant was operated well in the hospital’s Toto ward and thus asked her parents to come for her.
Kagure noted that the hospital usually registers two to three cases of children abandonment monthly with some of whom are children with special needs.
The hospital PRO further condemned the act of children abandonment as it’s criminalized under the chapter four of the Uganda’s constitution.
