MPs condemn brutal arrest of colleagues in opposition
The former state minister in charge of General duties, Sarah Opendi and the woman member of Parliament for Tororo district has condemned the manner in which law enforcement officers handled 11 opposition female members of Parliament.
Last week, 11 female Members of Parliament were brutally arrested by police while they protested the continued harassment of colleagues by security agencies.
Opendi was speaking at the belated women’s day celebrations of Mbarara city held at Independence Park on Friday, where she appealed to law enforcement officers to know their role of keeping law and order rather than violating the rights of Ugandans.
The deputy speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa who represented the Speaker Anita Among as the guest of honor, asked security operatives to stop tarnishing the name of the government that fought for peace.
He called for an investigation into the conduct of the officers who were involved.
During the same function, over UGX 60 million was collected by MPs in solidarity in a fundraising to support women’s Business saving groups including UGX 30 million from the speaker of parliament, Anita Among, UGX 10m from the deputy speaker of parliament and some from the different members of parliament, according to the Mbarara city woman member of parliament, Ritah Atukwasa Bwahiika.
