45-Kilowatt Solar Projects launched to Boost Rural Energy and Development
FRES Solar Uganda Limited has inaugurated three new 45-kilowatt solar power projects in Kiruhura and Kazo districts aimed at delivering reliable and sustainable energy to local residents, farmers and businesses. The projects are located in Kanyabihara village, Rwebishuri in Sanga Town Council and Orwigi cell in Burunga Subcounty in Kazo district.

These solar installations are set to transform the region by providing affordable electricity to households, agricultural operations and small enterprises fostering economic growth and environmental conservation. The initiative aligns with districts’ development priorities outlined in the 2025/2026 budget emphasizing education, livelihood enhancement and ecological sustainability.

The projects are supported with funding from Avis, Battery Bank Africa and The Energy and Partnership Africa which have contributed significantly to their successful implementation. The Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) has partnered with FRES Solar Uganda to ensure the company adheres to customer service standards and qualifies for a trading license reinforcing commitments to quality and reliability.
Residents have voiced concerns over high energy costs calling for a reduction in the unit price from UGX 1,500 to UGX1,000 shillings to make energy more affordable for small-scale businesses. They have also appealed for tax reductions to mitigate financial losses caused by the current rates. Arinda Franklin, Finance and Project Manager at FRES Solar Uganda highlighted that the current energy pricing is moderate compared to other power providers, with revenues used for machine repairs, staff salaries, and tax payments.
Raymond Ahabwe, the Kazo District Environmental Officer emphasized the importance of environmental conservation encouraging residents to prioritize tree planting over deforestation while Hon. Fred Ntungire, the Kazo district Vice Chairman lauded ERA’s role in promoting clean energy and highlighted the project’s potential to create new economic opportunities for residents.
The Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Kazo, Obed Timbaganya, also praised the effort noting alignment with district goals of improving livelihoods and education.
George Bakunda, RDC for Kiruhura District, expressed gratitude to FRES Solar Uganda for their commitment and thanked ERA for their support in ensuring quality customer service across Uganda.
The solar projects support Uganda’s broader environmental goals by reducing the carbon footprint and encouraging sustainable energy practices. They also empower residents to establish small-scale businesses, improve livelihoods and contribute to the local economy marking a significant step toward rural development and ecological preservation.
