
Mineral police arrest five in Kabale
Authorities from the Minerals Protection Unit headquarters in collaboration with officials from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development have arrested five suspects involved in illegal mineral processing activities.
The suspects are currently in detention at Kabale Central Police Station, pending further investigation. Several trucks suspected of transporting minerals illegally have also been impounded.
The operation, which commenced on September 17, 2025 was initiated following a stakeholders’ meeting aimed at curbing illegal mining and mineral processing. Led by the Commissioner of Minerals, Agnes Alaba, the intelligence-led raid targeted multiple illegal iron ore mining and crushing sites across the district including Nyakijumba along the Kabale-Mbarara highway, Butare cell in Rutooma Ward, Northern Division of Kabale Municipality and Rwenkuriju cell in Muyanje Ward, Bubare Town Council, Rubanda District.
During the crackdown, Kwesiga Stephen, Taibu Okuker, Owino John, Harish Karshan and Biryomumisho Isaac have been apprehended.
Additionally, two trucks, with registration numbers UBP 218F and UBM 893J both Tata Lorries were intercepted at Nyakijumba checkpoint and impounded. The trucks are believed to have been involved in transporting illegally processed minerals.
Several other individuals involved in illegal activities at various sites were also arrested but later released after being sensitized on the dangers and legal implications of their actions. They were cautioned and advised to desist from such acts emphasizing the importance of following lawful procedures in mineral processing.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to continuing these operations until all illegal mineral processing activities cease. They urge members of the public to utilize lawful channels for mineral processing and to cooperate with law enforcement agencies to prevent lawlessness in the sector.
