Museveni to crack whip on ‘idiots’
President Yoweri Museveni has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to safeguarding the integrity of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) primaries amid reports of misconduct and electoral malpractices. In a statement released this afternoon, President Museveni condemned those he described as self-seekers attempting to tarnish the party’s glorious heritage.
“The kutokooza (polluting) of the NRM primaries by self-seekers who do not care about the reputation and the glorious heritage of the NRM/NRA/FRONASA is unacceptable,” Museveni declared. “This heritage belongs to martyrs and heroes not to individuals who would at the cost of their lives, assault machine-guns of the enemy.”
He assured the public that state agencies have already begun taking action against those involved. “We have started the necessary anti-crime operations against the self-seekers, starting with the clear cases of the idiots alleged to have altered the results in the tallying,” he stated. “Eight individuals alleged to have manipulated election results during the tallying process have been arrested so far. They are from Mayuge, Buyende, Kapchorwa, Pader, Oyam, Rwampara, Kareenga and Mbarara.”
Museveni emphasized that investigations are ongoing. “Other targets are being followed up and I will keep the nation informed on the progress,” he added. He also called on party supporters and officials to assist in gathering evidence on other offences such as violence, bribery and interference with voter registers.
To address the legal aspects of the ongoing disputes, Museveni announced the formation of a committee comprising prominent lawyers. “We have constituted a powerful legal team to handle the petitions,” he explained. “Our mission is to clean up the NRM while also defending the wider interests of all Ugandans.”
Highlighting the importance of the party’s heritage, Museveni reaffirmed his dedication to protecting the principles upon which the NRM was founded. “We are committed to upholding the legacy of our heroes and martyrs and ensuring that the primaries reflect the true will of the people.”
