Mbarara: Police Officer arrested over shooting civilian to death
Police in Mbarara district have arrested one of their own over shooting a 45-year-old man to death while attempting to arrest him.
Samson Kasasira, the Rwizi Region Police Spokespersons said N56098 CPL Benson Agaba and N63315PC Boaz Tumuhimbise attached to Rubindi Police station in Mbarara district, had gone to arrest Gerald Tibigarukwamu, following a number of threatening violence complaints against him (Tibigarukwamu) by a one Godwin Tumwine.
Kasasira added that preliminary findings indicate that one of the officers, N56098 CPL Benson Agaba was prompted to discharge a bullet in the air when the suspect reportedly threatened to cut him with a panga.
Police officers together with residents at the crime scene earlier today.
He noted that the action did not yield expected results and the deceased advanced closer with determination to harm the officer.
This prompted the officer to further discharge the bullet that hit the suspect on the head killing him instantly. Kasasira identified the deceased as Gerald Tibigarukwamu, 45, a resident of Akatooma cell, Kagongi Parish, Kagongi sub-county in Mbarara district.
