Archbishop Bakyenga to be remembered for being a humble, selfless servant

Following the news of the death of the first Archbishop of Mbarara Archdiocese, Paul Kamuza Bakyenga on Tuesday, several people have continued to pay tribute to the deceased.

Bishops in Ankole region have shared fond recollections of the role he played in the ministry and the different aspects of life.

Rt. Rev. Bishop Johnson Twinomujuni of West Ankole diocese said he knew the late as a man who rendered his full life to the ministry of church. He noted that he will be remembered as a great teacher.

Rt. Rev. Bishop Nathan Ahimbisibwe of the South Ankole diocese described the late as a role model for all the religious leaders. He further talked about the late as a person who loved all the people regardless of their religious denominations.

Rt. Rev. Bishop Steven Namanya of the North Ankole diocese described the late as a down to earth person who did not consider himself on top of others despite the position God gave him in the Catholic Church.

Bakyenga is described by many as a person who felt with those suffering and had compassion for orphans, the reason he started Holy Innocents Children’s Hospital at Nyamitanga in 2009 to treat children of 0 to 12 years.

He also started Radio Maria Mbarara in 1996 describing it as the Christian voice in homes to get the gospel closer to people and uphold the Christian values.

Archbishop Emeritus Bakyenga,79, died in the wee hours of Tuesday morning at Nsambya Hospital in Kampala where he had gone for routine medical checkups.

In the tentative burial program for Archbishop Emeritus Bakyenga released by Mbarara Archdiocese, the deceased will be laid to rest on Sunday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Nyamitanga Parish.

The communications director of the Mbarara Archdiocese, Rev Fr Charles Lwanga Mutabaruka said the Emeritus Bakyenga will be buried inside the cathedral and will be the third prelate after the First Bishop of the then Rwenzori Vicariate Francis-Xavier Lacoursiere of the White Fathers who was buried inside.
