Police Officer shoots civilian dead in Bushenyi
Police in Bushenyi District are investigating circumstances under which a police officer shot and killed a civilian.
Martial Tumusiime, the greater Bushenyi police spokesperson confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Naboth Kyabonero,30, a resident of Buhimba B cell, Kitwe ward, Kyabugimbi town council in Bushenyi District.
According to Tumusiime, the incident took place on Thursday around 3:40 PM in Nyakibonera Trading Center, Kyeigomba B Cell, Kyeigomba Parish in Bushenyi District.
The Police officer identified as Bishaniko George,56, attached to Kyabugimbi Police Station in Bushenyi District reported a case of murder by shooting.
It’s alleged that Bishaniko George booked out at Kyabugimbi Police Station to arrest Kabosa Bafa,30, a resident of Kyeigomba B village, Kyeigomba Parish, Kyabugimbi S/County in Bushenyi District over accusations of breaking into a bar and stealing.
It is said that the suspect (Kabosa) was found with a gang of people, smoking opium, playing cards and drinking alcohol in a rented house and when the suspect saw the police constable armed, he moved out with a sharp panga and swang it with an intention of hacking the police officer.
In the process of self defense Bishaniko shot the suspect in the leg and the bullet went through and hit the deceased (Kyabonero) on the left side of the stomach and he died on spot.
Kabosa was then rushed to Kyabugimbi health centre IV for treatment while the body of the deceased was removed from the scene and taken Kabwohe healthcenter IV for postmortem examination.
Bishaniko has since been arrested while the gun used to shoot was recovered and exhibited alongside the panga which the suspect was holding with intentions of hacking the arresting officer and investigations into the matter continue.
